MAC players part of NFL free agent scramble

​National Football League teams slected a record 12 former Mid-American Conference players in the 2017 draft. That is one better than the previous mark of 11 in 2005.

Lions add EMU’s O’Connor to draft haul

Former Eastern Michigan University defensive end Pat O'Connor was selected by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft Saturday in Philadelphia.  O'Connor was the 250th overall pick in the three-day selection process.

O'Connor is the 28th EMU player to be picked in the draft. He is just the third Eastern Michigan player to be selected by the Lions, joining Al Clark (1971) and Charlie Batch (1998).

Pittsburg picks WMU lineman Adams

Western Michigan defensive lineman Keion Adams was drafted in the seventh round with the 248th overall selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.
​Adams gives the Broncos three players drafted this year, the most since having four players taken in 1972. It is the most in a single year from a MAC school since Temple also had three players drafted in 2012.

Bulls TE Shreck picked by Bengals

University at Buffalo tight end Mason Schreck was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. The Medina, OH native was taken with the 251st pick.

Schreck had by far his best season as a Bull in 2016. The senior tight end finished the year with 59 catches for 651 yards and four touchdowns en route to earning All-MAC Second Team honors. He had 10 more catches than his first three seasons combined and his 651 receiving yards were the most ever by a tight end in school history. He finished his career with 108 receptions for 1,120 yards and six touchdowns.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Wide receiver Corey Davis became the highest NFL Draft pick in Western Michigan Broncos history as he was selected No. 5 overall by the Tennessee Titans Wednesday night. He is the second first round selection from WMU, after Jason Babin was taken 27th overall in 2004.

Davis registered a career-high 97 receptions for 1,500 yards and an FBS-high 19 touchdowns last season and ended 2016 as the all-time leading receiver in FBS history with 5,285 yards.

Miami coach Chuck Martin may have been a rookie head coach at the D-1 level when he arrived in Oxford to lead the Miami RedHawks grid program, but he had been around football way more than enough to know that line play will dictate many things. He therefore made it a priority to bolster the MU’s lines, and those efforts appeared to be paying dividends as Miami went on a 2016 second half run that carried the RedHawks to a share of the MAC East title and also a bowl game appearance.

Miami returns much of its cast on both sides of the ball in 2017, so there is renewed optimism on many levels in RedHawk country.

AKRON, Ohio – Akron football's White squad edged out its Blue counterpart, 24-3, in the Zips' annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field.

If the Miami RedHawks final spring practice of 2017 lacked some of the pizzazz MU fans are expecting this fall, there was a pretty good reason – HEALTH!!
 
Although the spring ‘Hawks have generally avoided the kind of catastrophic injury that took out quarterback Gus Ragland for half  of 2016-17, “nicked up” players dotted the sideline Saturday as MU took its Spring Showcase inside. Chilly, windy and damp weather prevailed outside, so it was decided earlier in the week to move the event to adjacent Dauch Indoor Sports Complex.
