It’s the first week of conference play and MAC teams are likely chomping at the bit to get started. The Ohio Bobcats and Miami RedHawks should be no exception.

For Ohio, it’s time to start its quest for a MAC East title. A preseason MAC media poll indicated the Bobcats should be able to make a run in the division. They bring a 2-2 non-conference play record into this week’s action.

Miami, on the other hand, is still looking for its first win of the season. Conference play is an opportunity to regroup and face some familiar foes.
They don’t get much more familiar than Miami and Ohio, who  . . .

One of the best match-ups of Week Five could be in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Undefeated Western Michigan visits one-loss Central Michigan Saturday night. While it might be the first week of conference action, this is a game may well have far reaching effects in the MAC West championship race.
Both programs, of course, were part of a four-way tie for first place last year. Neither one ended up in the MAC championship game as Northern Illinois triumphed through a tie-break.
Western Michigan prevailed in a 41-39 shootout last year in Kalamazoo. Could another offensive explosion be in the offing?
Both teams have . . .

What a difference a year makes!
Last year, Eastern Michigan owned a 1-3 record after non-conference play. This year, the Eagles are not only 3-1, they are playing against a defending MAC champion Bowling Green team that is 1-3.
What a difference a year makes, indeed!

For the second consecutive game, the Akron Zips played an offensive shootout last week -- this time against the Mountaineers of Appalachian State. Akron fell behind 31-14 late in the third quarter before rallying back to close to within seven points late in the fourth quarter. That, however, was as close as UA could get as the visitors ended the Zips three-game winning streak at InfoCision Stadium. Kent State, meanwhile, had a rough go of it on the road at No. 1 Alabama.

Huskies quarterback Drew Hare had a sensational day last October when NIU posted a 58-41 victory over Ball State. Hare completed 90 percent of his passes, rolling up 363 yards and two TDs through the air as the hosts piled up 636 yards of total offense.

There’s good and bad news on the Toledo Rockets schedule this week.
The Rockets travel to Provo Utah for a Friday night game against BYU. The Cougars are a very well-respected program that has enjoyed plenty of success. However, they own a 1-3 record entering this week’s matchup.
Hmmmmm … you think!! 1-3 doesn’t sound very good, but it is BYU.
Failing to respect the Cougars might be a big mistake. That 1-3 record includes . . .

By MIKE SMITH
CINCINNATI, OH -- Penalties and a pair of turnovers proved costly Saturday at Nippert Stadium as the Miami RedHawks once again came up short, 27-20, in a bid to wrest the Victory Bell away from rival Cincinnati.

After trailing 3-0 early, Miami grabbed the lead three times, only to have the Bearcats tie things up. It was 10-10 at halftime and after MU quarterback Billy Bahl tossed a red zone interception and Cincinnati missed a 42-yard  field goal attempt – both in the last 29 seconds.

Miami took its last lead, 20-17, with a 35-yard Nick Dowd field goal with 1:07 left in the third period.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore quarterback Riley Neal scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:47 remaining to lift the Ball State football team to a 31-27 victory at Florida Atlantic Saturday evening.

Not only did Ball State (3-1) play the entire game from behind as FAU (1-3) jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, but the Cardinals had to deal with lightning delays that totaled more than two hours.

The game, which was originally scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., didn’t start until almost 7 p.m. due to lightning. A few minutes after halftime, the game was halted again for 30 minutes because of lightning in the vicinity. Right before Ball State began its game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, one final 30-minute delay halted the game.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan Broncos maintained their  undefeated ways, defeating Georgia Southern, 49-31, in the Broncos' final non-conference game Saturday night at Waldo Stadium.

Western Michigan's 4-0 start is its best since the program went 5-0 to open the season in 1994. The Broncos have a chance to match that record next Saturday when they face rival Central Michigan (3-1) in Mount Pleasant. Both teams are major contenders for the MAC West title. Kickoff for the annual Battle of the Cannon Trophy game is at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.
