The Buffalo Bulls play in one of two non-conference match-ups this week. (Toledo-BYU is the other). UB dropped its first two games of the season, but managed to pull out an overtime win against Army, 23-20, last week.
Boston College evened its record at 2-2 last week when it blasted Wagner 42-10. It was a near inverse of the previous week, when . . .
This is the ninth meeting between the two programs, with the Eagles leading the all-time series, 6-2. The last meeting was in 2006, when Boston College overwhelmed UB, 41-0.
BOSTON COLLEGE (2-2, 0-2 ACC)
► The Eagles lost to Georgiea Tech 17-14 in the opener and rebounded for a 26-7 win over UMass. Virginia Tech blasted BC in Week Three before Boston College thumped Wagner, 42-10.
► Quarterback Patrick Towles is about as big as they come at the position (6-5, 253, Sr). He tallied four touchdowns last week – two through the air and another two on the ground. Towles completed 9 of 16 passes for 158 yards without an interception. He tossed one pick in each of the first three games.
► Towles rushed seven times for 46 yards (6.6 ypc) against Wagner. He also completed 9 of 16 passes for 157 yards in the route. Towles has completed 49.4 percent (41 of 83) his passes on the year with four scores and three interceptions.
► Sophomore Michael Walker is tops among the Eagles in receptions (10). He as provided 146 yards and a touchdown. Jeff Smith (6-1, 192, So) leads the team in yardage with 182 yards and also tops receivers with three scores.
► Yet another sophomore – Jon Hilliman (6-0, 229) leads the rushing attack. He has 241 yards on 68 carries (3.5 ypc) with four TDs. Towles has three TDs as part of his 33 carries for 156 yards. Davon Jones owns a 5.8 ypc average on 20 trips for 116 yards.
►Kicker Mike Knoll has hit 8 of 9 PATs and both FG tries with a long of 40.
BUFFALO BULLS (1-2, 0-0 MAC)
► The Bulls overcame a 14-point deficit against Army, which had not allowed a fourth quarter TD, last week.
► Since joining the FBS ranks in 1999, the Bulls are 1-25 all time against opponents from power five conferences.
► The Bulls will be playing their first “day” game after participating in three straight night contests.
► Tyree Jackson is the first freshman quarterback to start for the Bulls since Joe Licata in 2012.
► Since being inserted into the starting lineup midway through the second quarter of the opener against Albany, Jackson has yet to be sacked.
► Senior Jordan Johnson (6-1, 220) leads the Bulls in rushing. He has carried 50 times for 218 yards (4.4 ypc) with one TD. Jackson, meanwhile, had two TDs in his 30 carries for 181 yards.
► Tight end Mason Schreck (6-4, 258) tops UB receivers with 11 catches for 147 yards and a TD.
► Kicker Adam Mitcheson has converted 5 of 6 PATs and 4 of 6 field goals with a; long of 45. He earned MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his efforts against Army.
► LB Khalil Hodge has 39 tackles to lead the defense. Junior LB Ishma Hargrove is next with 30 hits.
► Outside linebacker Brandon Berry has left the team, according to the Buffalo News. Berry made Second Team All-MAC as a junior, ranking eighth in the conference in tackles. However, Jarrett Franklin, a starter in 2014 who missed last year due to injury, had moved into the starting role.
