Akron falls as Creighton pulls away in second half

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The culmination of a record-setting campaign for the Akron men's basketball team came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday  as third-seeded Creighton bested the Zips, 77-60, at PPG Paints Arena.

Akron senior Enrique Freeman shined for UA, matching a single-season NCAA record with his 31st double-double of the season while registering a team-high 21 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

Mastadons eliminate Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team's 2023-24 campaign came to a close inside the Stroh Center Wednesday night (March 20). The Falcons hosted Purdue Fort Wayne in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament with the Mastodons claiming a 77-75 final that came down to the final shot. On the year, BGSU tallied 20 wins, one of 10 teams in the country to go from 20 losses in 2022-23 to 20 wins in 2023-24.

Marcus Hill led the Falcons in scoring with 26 points, marking his 19th 20-point game of the season. Da'Shawn Phillip followed with a season-high 16 points. Jason Spurgin stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points while leading the team in both rebounds with eight and assists with five. Trey Thomas rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13, including three of BGSU's five three-pointers.

OXFORD, OH -- After surrendering a pair of runs  in the top of the seventh, Miami rallied for two runs in the bottom half to edge Louisville 8-7 Tuesday at the Miami softball complex

Kate Kobayashi homered and freshman Hadley Parisien doubled in the winning tally, allowing Miami to raise its season record to 19-6. Louisvile dropped to 19-10. Addy Jarvis (9-1) got the victory in relieve of starter Madilyn Reeves.  Alyssa Zabala (12-4) took the loss for UL.

Falcons to host IPFW in CIT tourney

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team has accepted a bid to play in the 2024 CollegeInsiders.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) and will host the first round at the Stroh Center on Wednesday, March 20. The Falcons will be hosting Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday with a scheduled 7 p.m. tip. 

"We are honored to accept the invitation to play in the CIT," said head coach Todd Simon. "It is a great opportunity to continue to compete with this special group for BGSU and build on a 20-win season.

​No. 14 seed Akron will face No. 3 Creighton in NCAA tourney

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's basketball team learned its draw for the 2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship on Sunday, March 17 as the 14-seeded Zips (24-10) will battle third-seeded Creighton Bluejays (23-9) in first round action on Thursday, March 21 at PPG Arena in Pittsburgh, Penn. as part of the Midwest Regional.

The winner of the Akron-Creighton will advance to face the winner of South Carolina and Oregon in second-round play. 

Akron will be making its sixth overall NCAA Division I Tournament appearance after qualifying in 1986, 2009, 2011,2013, 2022.

Late free throw lifts Akron to MAC title win

CLEVELAND, OH  -- In the end, it came down to free throws. 

Greg Tribble hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to lift Akron over Kent State 62-61 Saturday in the Mid-American Conference Championship game. 

In edging its arch-rival, No. 3 seeded Akron (24-10, 13-5 MAC)  earned an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA tournament. Kent State, a No. 8 seed, who started the tournament with a win over top-seeded Toledo, fell to 17-17  (8-10 MAC).

Freeman brings MVP game as Akron nips Ohio

CLEVELAND, OH -- Akron forward Enrique Freeman continued to showcase his MAC MVP form Friday by leading the No. 2 seeded Zips to a 65-62 win over third-seeded Ohio at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. With the victory, UA advances to meet arch-rival Kent State (a No. 8 seed) in the Mid-American Conference championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). 
The winner of that tilt earns an automatic NCAA Tournament berth.  

Freeman, who erupted for 30 points and 12 rebounds in UA's quarterfinal win over Miami Thursday, tallied 24 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in Friday's battle against an Ohio team that had won seven straight and 11 of its last 12 against MAC opponents. That streak included a 74-67 win over UA back on Feb. 27.

Flashes shoot their way to tourney final

CLEVELAND, OH -- Eighth-seeded Kent State (17-16, 8-10 MAC) continued its march through the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Friday with a 73-60 victory over No. 5 Bowling Green (20-13, 10-8 MAC) at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.

The Flashes paved their path with outstanding shooting, connecting on 51 percent from the field and 66.7 percent (12 of 18) beyond the arc. With Bowling Green htting 37.7 percent from the field and 20 percent (4 of 20) on threes, KSU easily overcame a 16-9 Falcon edge in free throws.

Playing all 40 minutes, guards Jalen Sullinger (22 points) and Giovanni Santiago (20 points) accounted for much of the Kent State damage. The former . . .

Top-seeded Toledo ousted in MAC first round action

CLEVELAND, OH - In some years, March Madness is preceded by MAC Madness, and there was  certainly some of the latter Thursday as Mid-American Conference basketball tournament play began at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. Lower seeds won two of the first three games, with the big upset being No. 8 seed Kent State knocking out top-seed Toledo 67-59. Bowling Green, a No. 5 seed, also advanced by ousting No. 4 seed Central Michigan 66-56.

In other action, second-seeded Akron rallied from a first-half deficit to dispatch No. 7 seed Miami 75-63. Ohio 
(No. 3 seed) had the rout of the day, grabbing an early lead and cruising past No. 6 seed Western Michigan 82-55.

MAC announces 2023-24 All-MAC teams, awards

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the All-MAC Teams and Specialty Award selections for the 2023-24 men’s basketball season today. All awards were voted on by the league's 12 head coaches, with coaches unable to vote for their own student-athletes.
 
Akron’s Enrique Freeman was named the Player of the Year, while Central Michigan Tony Barbee became the first Chippewa head coach in in nine seasons to earn Coach of the Year honors. Toledo’s Javan Simmons was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while fellow Rocket Tyler Cochran and Central Michigan’s Anthony Pritchard each garnered Co-Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Western Michigan’s JaVaugh Hannah took home the Sixth Man of the Year award to round out this year's specialty selections.

Friday action finalizes MAC Tourney pairings

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference has announced official pairings for the 2024 MAC Men's Basketball Tournament at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. Tournament MACtion gets underway on Thursday, March 14th with Game One set to tip-off at 11AM ET on ESPN+.

The regular season champion Toledo Rockets hold the no. 1 seed and will take on Kent State in a rematch of the two teams' regular season finale. Game two will feature the no. 4 Central Michigan Chippewas and no. 5 Bowling Green Falcons, who went to overtime in both regular season matchups this year.

​In the day's third contest, the no. 2 Akron Zips will look for revenge against the no. 7 Miami RedHawks, who bested the Zips by two points in Oxford back in late January. The opening day will then close with the no. 3 Ohio Bobcats taking on the no. 6 Western Michigan Broncos, who notched their own two-point victory over Ohio in January. MAC Releases 2024 'New Model' Football Schedule

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference today announced its football schedule for the 2024 season.

This marks the first integration of the new conference schedule format. This new model will allow for each team to face all 11 conference opponents home and away at least once during a three-year cycle. Additionally, the new format will incorporate protected opponents based on geographic location and rivalries and eliminates the MAC East and West Divisions. 
 
The MAC will release an updated schedule later this spring with game times and television for the first three weeks of the regular season and its midweek MACtion schedule. All remaining game times and television will be announced 12 days prior to the scheduled game. Games will air on ESPN platforms (ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPN+) and CBS Sports Network.
 
The 2024 conference season will kick off Saturday, September 21 with two contests as Central Michigan hosts Ball State, while Buffalo travels to Northern Illinois. The 28th MAC Football Championship game will be held on Saturday, December 7 (Time TBA) between the top two teams based on conference winning percentage. This will mark the 21st MAC Football Championship game at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions.
