OXFORD, Ohio –
A potential Miami RedHawks victory slipped through the cracks in Cancun Challenge action Sunday when an Elon Phoenix player slipped into position for an off-balance tip-in with .07 seconds left to give visiting Elon a 70-68 win at Millett Hall.

Kevin Blake, a 6-3 senior guard who saw eight minutes of playing time, put himself in the right place at the right time for the Phoenix, who had been banking on a basket by guard Luke Eddy. The sophomore guard scored 15 of his game high points in the second half and played a key role in Elon’s critical stretch run.

When Miami (2-4) tied the contest with a pair of Chris Bryant free throws with 20 seconds remaining, Elon (3-3) was able to play for the last shot. Eddy definitely had the hot hand, but he missed his shot off the drive with three seconds left. Blake managed to get in for an off-balance tip. After bouncing around on the rim briefly, it fell through to give Elon the victory

Majerle-led GCU takes Chippewas to final possession

11/30/2014

Picture
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - It was far from pretty for the Central Michigan Chippewas, but a 26-point effort from junior Chris Fowler lifted CMU over Grand Canyon Saturday night, 79-77.

CMU is 5-0 for the first time since 1980-81. Grand Canyon fell to 2-4.

Even though the Chippewas were tested for the first time of the year, they were able to make enough plays down the stretch to seal the victory, coach Keno Davis said.

"I think with our team in our first four games prior to tonight, we had found a different way to win," he said. "Whether it was a great rebounding night, great defensive night, great offensive night or great shooting night, we found ways to win.

Poor first half sets up KSU loss to Ramblers

11/30/2014

KENT, OHIO – After the Kent State Golden Flashes fell behind to the Ramblers of Loyola University Chicago by 20 points late in the first half, they used three separate runs to close the margin. The hole KSU dug, however, was just too much to overcome. Loyola righted its ship down the stretch and came away with a 69-61 win Saturday night at the MAC Center.

For Kent State (4-2), it was a second consecutive loss at home, as they fell to Yale in the Championship Game of the Men against Breast Cancer Classic Sunday. Meanwhile, Loyola Chicago (4-1) finished a three-game road trip which saw the Ramblers win at Texas-San Antonio while losing at nationally ranked Michigan State.

“You have to make layups; you have to make free throws; and you have to play like we did in the second half. Tonight’s effort was not good enough.” KSU head man Rob Senderoff said.

11/29/2014

ROCHESTER, MI – Toledo’s bid for a comeback victory at Oakland on Saturday afternoon came up just a bucket short in an 81-79 road setback to the Golden Grizzlies.

Sophomore guard Jonathan Williams topped the Rockets (2-4) with a career-high 19 points. Joining Williams in double figures were senior guards Justin Drummond (16 pts.) and Julius Brown (13 pts.). Brown had a chance to even the contest at the end of regulation but his shot was blocked by sophomore guard Kahlil Felder.

Senior guard Dante Williams paced Oakland (2-5) with 20 points, including a 6-of-9 performance from behind the three-point arc.

Drummond also paced the Rockets with seven rebounds but that wasn't enough to offset the Golden Grizzlies' 33-29 advantage.

KENT, OHIO – Sophomore QB Colin Reardon’s five-yard touchdown pass to senior WR Chris Humphrey with one minute remaining in the fourth quarter, gave the Kent State Golden Flashes a thrilling 27-24 victory over the Akron Zips Friday afternoon at Dix Stadium.

The victory ended a three-game losing streak for Kent State (2-10, 1-6 MAC). In addition, it was the Flashes first victory in Mid-American Conference play this season and gained possession of the Wagon Wheel Trophy for the fourth time in the last five years.

“Just an unbelievable team victory.” KSU head coach Paul Haynes said. “We had our ups and downs but still had that belief to get the victory.”

Akron (5-7, 3-5) finished the season losing five of its last six games after opening the campaign with a 4-2 mark.

With NIU win, Rockets will be watching Friday
Ypsilanti, MI – Sophomore Logan Woodside threw for 323 yards and a career-high five touchdowns as Toledo cruised to a 52-16 victory over Eastern Michigan in the regular-season finale at Ypsilanti Friday.

With the victory, Toledo (8-4, 7-1 MAC) earned a co-West Division championship, sharing the crown with Northern Illinois. NIU, which earlier in the day defeated Western Michigan, won the tie-breaker by virtue of its victory over UT on Nov. 11. The Huskies will represent the West Division and play Bowling Green in the MAC Championship on Dec. 5.

Woodside, who completed 14-of-18 passes, threw TD passes to five different receivers. Four of his scoring throws came in the first half, which gave Toledo a 42-9 edge at the break. Sophomore Kareem Hunt rushed for 110 yards and a TD on 22 carries, moving his streak of games with 100 or more yards to 10.

Huskies secure another MAC West title
It was new season and a new team, but the final regular season results looked very similar for the Northern Illinois Huskies, who captured their fifth straight Mid-American Conference West Division crown Friday with a 31-21 win over Western Michigan at Waldo Stadium.

Once again, the Huskies (10-2, 7-1 MAC) did it “the Hard Way,” coming back from a 14-point deficit and a nightmarish offensive first half to score the last 24 points of the contest and win their sixth straight game. Western Michigan (8-4, 6-2 MAC) committed six turnovers in the game as NIU stopped the Broncos’ six-game winning streak.

MRO Sneak Peek: Akron at Kent State

11/27/2014

Picture
EVAN MEYER
In their final home game of the season, the Akron Zips opened an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Minutemen of Massachusetts, 30-6, to end a four-game losing streak. The victory equaled Akron's total for all of last season and also matched the most home wins since 2006.
The Zips will be seeking win number six this week at Kent State, where the two teams will battle for the Wagon Wheel Trophy. Six victories would be the most Akron football wins since 2005 and make UA bowl eligible

One oddity to this year's matchup is that while Akron will be playing for the first time in 10 days, Kent State last played Nov. 12. It's Nov. 19 game at Buffalo was cancelled due to the massive snow storm that burried the area at that time.In any case, with just one win to their credit, the well-rested Flashes will be trying to play spoiler while trying to win back the Wagon Wheel trophy that went to Akron last year.

CANCUN, MEXICO -- A hot-shooting Hokies team proved too much for Miami Wednesday as Virginia Tech downed the RedHawks 78-63 in Cancun Challenge action.
Freshman Zach McCormick, making his first start, was the only RedHawk player to reach double figures. He netted 12 points, hitting 4-of-9 from the field overall, 3-of-5 on treys and 1 of 2 free throws.
Wednesday’s output doubled McCormick’s previous season total. His 27 minutes was also a season high as he started the campaign coming off a preseason injury.

Shooting woes help sink NIU at Iowa

11/27/2014

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore Aaric Armstead posted a team-best 13 points, but the Northern Illinois Huskies were unable to overcome a 28 percent shooting night as they fell, 70-49, to Iowa on Wednesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Junior Darrell Bowie and senior Jordan Threloff each added nine points, and Threloff also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
“I thought that we competed and played hard,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. “I just expected more from my team. We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well and that hurts. When you are in a big game on the road you have to knock down a few shots.”
