CANCUN, MEXICO -- A hot-shooting Hokies team proved too much for Miami Wednesday as Virginia Tech downed the RedHawks 78-63 in Cancun Challenge action.
Freshman Zach McCormick, making his first start, was the only RedHawk player to reach double figures. He netted 12 points, hitting 4-of-9 from the field overall, 3-of-5 on treys and 1 of 2 free throws.
Wednesday’s output doubled McCormick’s previous season total. His 27 minutes was also a season high as he started the campaign coming off a preseason injury.
Guards Will Sullivan and Eric Washington both added nine points to the Miami cause, while forward Chris Bryant chipped in eight points.

Virginia Tech was led by guards Adam Smith (26) and Justin Bibbs (22). Both thrived from beyond the arc. Smith hit 5-of-7 from distance, while Bibbs was good on 5 of 6 behind the line. No other VaTech player hit a trey as the team went 10-of-19 on threes.

The Hokies connected on 25-of-51 (49%) overall from the field and helped themselves at the foul line where they hit 18 (of 24). Miami converted 8 of 13 charity tosses.

MU fashioned a 7-3 lead early and the game was tied at 9-all before Virginia Tech finished the half by outscoring the RedHawks 30-8.

After shooting 32 percent (8-of-25) in the first half, Miami hit 15-of-28  (53.6%) after intermission. That allowed MU to outscore the Hokies 46-39 in the second stanza, but it wasn’t enough to catch Virginia Tech.

Miami, which fell to Northwestern 55-46 Tuesday, concludes its Cancun Challenge action with a home game Sunday against Elon (1 p.m.).
