Talented Chips could make make MAC West run

Central Michigan Chippewas
Coach: Jim McElwain
2020 Results: 3-3 overall and MAC
2021 MAC MEDIA PREDICTION: Fourth

Two years ago under then new head coach Jim McElwain, Central Michigan surprised a BUNCH of people by capturing a MAC West title  After going 3-3 in 2020, CMU hopes to reach the top again.
This year’s MAC media poll put the Chippewas in fourth place, and all three teams above them beat Central last year. All three also drew votes for first, while CMU did not.

Of course, the burgundy and gold didn’t get any first place preseason nods in 2019. With the 2021 version fielding an abundance of skilled players, it wouldn’t be crazy thoughts to envision the current Chippewas as serious division title contenders.

Young Falcons must step up to move up
Picture
Bowling Green Falcons
Coach: Scott Loeffler - third year
2020 Results: 0-5 overall and MAC
2021 MAC Media Prediction: Last in MAC East

You know your team is young when roughly half of the squad has not been to a (college) football camp. It’s not an ideal situation, of course, but head coach Scott Loeffler recently noted youth is certainly part of 2021 Falcon football.

Bowling Green was young last year, and that certainly played a role in the team’s 0-5 finish. Two stats summarize the Falcons struggles. They scored a league worst 11.4 points per game and surrendered a MAC worst 45.0 ppg.

Suffice it to say, winning this year will require improvement on both sides of the ball, but getting the offense going could create some momentum.

Bulls hungry for another title run
Picture
BUFFALO BULLS
Head Coach: Maurice Linguist (first year)
2020 Record: 6-1 … Lost to Ball State (38-28) in MAC Championship game. Defeated Marshall (17-10) in Camellia Bowl. Finished No. 25 in final AP Top 25 Poll.
2021 MAC Media Poll Prediction: 4th place MAC East

ABOUT THE BULLS:
Propelled by an explosive running attack, Buffalo trampled opponents on the way to a MAC Championship game appearance last year. Led by MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Jaret Patterson and fellow running back Kevin Marks, the Bulls averaged 287.4 rushing yards per game. They averaged 51 points per game while winning the MAC East crown, but were held to 28 points by Ball State and 17 points in the winning finale against Marshall.

While Patterson is gone and six other Bulls joined head coach Lance Leipold at Kansas, UB still drew four first place votes from media members in the preseason poll.

2021 MAC Media Prediction: First Place MAC West and overall MAC championship winner.

About the Cardinals:

One might say Ball State’s breakout 2020 campaign had its roots in the accumulated frustrations of close losses during the previous season. “Our guys were . . .
