 MRO UPDATE: Bowling Green Falcons

Editor’s Note: This is part of a series checking on MAC teams before they enter Mid-American Conference play. All rankings are MAC, and there are 12 MAC teams)
 

COACH:  Michael Huger (First season)
The New York City native is a Bowling Green alumnus and played under renowned BG coach Jim Larranaga, earning All-MAC honors in his junior (2nd team) and senior (1st team) seasons. After playing professionally in Europe, Huger went into coaching and eventually joined Larranaga’s staffs at George Mason and Miami (Fla). He replaced Chris Jans.
 
2014 RECORD: 21-12 (11-7 MAC, 3rd in East)
MAC TOURNEY: Bowling Green defeated Ball State 88-75 before falling to Eastern Michigan 73-67 in second round action.
OTHER POST SEASON PLAY:
The Falcons edged St. Francis (PA) 67-64 on the road in first round action of the CollegeInsiders Tournament (CIT).  Visiting Canisius cruised past BGSU in the second round.
 
LEFT THE BUILDING
► Bowling Green lost six letter-winners, including two starters.
► Richaun Holmes was a major force for the Falcons. In addition to his team-high 14.7 ppg. average, Holmes averaged 8.0 rpg and 2.7 blocks (No. 1 MAC) per outing. His 56.3 percent field goal percentage tied for tops in the conference.
► Guard Jehvon Clarke (10.7 ppg.) was the only other Falcon to average in double figures.
► Another significant contributor now gone is Anthony Henderson (8.8 ppg., 3.1 rpg)

BACK FOR MORE:
►   There are eight returning lettermen, including .  .  .  

.  .  .   three starters. Junior Zack Denny, a 6-2 guard, averaged 9.2 ppg. and chipped in 5.2 rebounds per contest over his sophomore campaign.
Spencer Parker averaged 7.8 ppg. an 3.7 rpg. David Joseph, also a senior, added 4.2 ppg to the cause and handed out 3.3 assists.

2015-16 RECORD: 9-4
► The Falcons got off to a rough start under a new coach, losing two of the first three games. They then reeled off six straight wins before going 2-2 over the final four games of non-conference play.

OTHER:
► The preseason media poll projected Bowling Green to finish sixth in the East Division.
► Bowling Green is averaging 71.7 ppg (10th) and yielding 69.1 per contest (6th). The +2.6 scoring margin is eighth among MAC teams.
► The Falcons are connecting on 44.4 percent (6th) of their shots from the field overall. They lead the conference in 3-point shooting (39.1%).
 
► Bowling Green is eighth in rebounding margin with a +2.1 mark. It is 10th in turnover margin (0.92).
 
► Parker and Denny lead the Falcons scoring with 13.4 ppg averages. Both are also leading the way in rebounding with 6.2 rpg.and 7.2 rpg. marks, respectively. Denny leads the team with 27 3-point goals. He is hitting 44.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
 
► Junior Wesley Alcegaire, a 6-5 guard, is just short of double figures with 9.4 ppg, while Rasheed Worrell (8.4 ppg) and Antwon Lillard (7.4 ppg.) combine for over 15 points per contest.
 
► Bowling Green opens the season Wednesday at home against Miami (7 p.m. ET). It remains home for a contest against Central Michigan Saturday (7 p.m. ET).
