For the second straight season, the Akron Zips earned an automatic qualifying bid for the National Invitation Tournament as they are scheduled to travel to the University of Houston for first round action on Wednesday, March 15.
The No. 7 seed Zips (26-8) will collide with the No. 2 seed Cougars (21-10) at 7:30 p.m. ET at Texas Southern's Health and Physical Education Arena, The game will air live on ESPNU.
The winner of Wednesday's contest advances to second round action against the winner of No. 3 BYU and No. 6 UT-Arlington. Game time and location are to be determined.
The Zips will be making their seventh appearance in the NIT, the fifth under Dambrot. Akron is 2-6 all-time in the tournament and 2-4 with Dambrot at the helm. UA has made 12 Division I postseason appearances, including the nine of the last 10 seasons.
Akron last appeared in the NIT in 2016 against Ohio State. The Zips traveled to Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio and forced overtime before falling 72-63.
CIT – Ball State vs. Fort Wayne
The Ball State men's basketball team is headed to the postseason for the second straight year, accepting an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).
The Cardinals will make the short trip up I-69 to play a first-round road game Wednesday against the Fort Wayne Mastodons. The contest will tip at 7 p.m. on campus at the Gates Sports Center.
Ball State is making its second straight trip to the CIT and its 13th postseason appearance at the Division I level. BSU won two overtime games in last year’s event to reach the quarterfinals before falling at eventual champion Columbia.
Fort Wayne enters the postseason at 19-12 overall. The Mastodons went 8-8 in the Summit League and lost to Omaha in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
The CIT, now in its ninth season, plays all games played on campus sites. There is no pre-determined bracket for the event. In an effort to ensure geographic stability, future round opponents are determined after the results of previous rounds.

CBI: Toledo vs George Washington
The Toledo men’s basketball team (17-16) has accepted a bid to compete in the 2017 College Basketball Invitational, as announced by the Gazelle Group. The Rockets will travel to Washington, DC to face Atlantic 10 foe George Washington (19-14) in CBI first-round action on Wednesday, March 15 at GW’s Charles E. Smith Center. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
The Rockets, who faced the toughest non-conference schedule in the Mid-American Conference, will be making their third postseason appearance under Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk. UT previously has participated in the 2014 National Invitation Tournament as well as the 2012 CollegeInsiders.com Invitational Tournament during Kowalczyk’s tenure.
The CBI is a single-elimination tournament up until the best-of-three finals, with all games played at campus sites. After the first-round games, the quarterfinal round will take place on Monday, March 20 followed by the semifinal round on Wednesday, March 22. Prior to the semifinals, the remaining teams will be re-bracketed. The finals series is a best-of-three in which one team will host two of the three games. Those games will be played on March 27, March 29 and March 31.
Past CBI champions include Tulsa, Oregon State, VCU, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Santa Clara, Siena, Loyola (IL) and Nevada. Teams from nearly every conference have participated in the event. Twenty-eight teams have used the CBI to springboard to the NCAA Tournament the following year, while another 17 have gone on to the NIT.
ESPN is again the official television home of the CBI presented by FIVE FOUR. ESPNU will televise each game of the best-of-three Championship Series.
