BOWLING GREEN, KY -
- For anyone who hadn’t previously seen Western Kentucky quarterback Brandon Doughty in action, his first half performance against the Miami RedHawks Saturday might have come across as stunning. Those who have seen him, however, might have considered it another huge day at the office.

The sixth-year senior tossed five first half TDs and added one more in the second half as the Hilltoppers drubbed visiting Miami, 56-14, at Houchens-Smith Stadium. The score was 49-7 after WKU scored on a Doughty four-yard pass to Tyler Higby with 10 seconds remaining in the period.

More Saturday Matchups

BALL STATE AT NO. 17/19 NORTHWESTERN
Saturday, Sept. 26, 8 p.m.
Ryan Stadium, Evanston, Ill

The Wildcats are 3-0, thanks in part to a stingy defense. Northwestern has allowed just 16 points over three games. Sophomore linebacker Anthony Walker has already earned two Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors. He is just one piece of what head coach Pat Fitzgerald feels is the fastest defensive unit since he took over the helm in Evanston. NU has prevailed over Stanford (16-6), Pitt (41-0) and Duke (19-10).
The Wildcats got just 70 yards passing last week against Duke, but they rushed for 201, with Justin Jackson picking up 120 yards on 35 carries.
Ball State is coming off a 28-17 win over Eastern Michigan as the Cardinals picked up the first Mid-American Conference win of 2015 to run their record to 2-1 overall, 1-0 MAC.

ARKANSAS STATE AT TOLEDO
Saturday, Sept. 26, 7 p.m.
Glass Bowl, Toledo, OH

The Rockets are rolling, with big wins over No. 18 Arkansas to open their season and Iowa State in two overtimes last week.
The Red Wolves rolle Missouri State, 70-7 , last week after losses to a pair of Top 25 teams-- No. 8 USC (55-6) and No. 21 Missouri (27-20) .
These two teams faced off last year in the GoDaddy Bowl, with UT posting a wild 63-44 victory. The scoreboard could be busy again Saturday.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS AT BOSTON COLLEGE
Saturday, Sept. 26, 1 p.m.
Alumni Stadium, Chestnut Hill, MA

How will the Huskies respond after coming up short on an upset for the ages at No. 1 Ohio State (20-13) last week?
NIU opened with wins over UNLV and Murray State. Boston College is also 2-1 after a 14-0 loss to No. 9 Florida State in its last outing.
Northern Illinois has a very capable offense, but it really didn't get untracked last week. This could be another defensive battle.

OHIO AT MINNESOTA
Saturday, Sept. 26, 3:30 p.m.
TCF Bank Stadium, Minnesapolis, MN

Speaking of defenses, the Ohio Bobcats brought a good one into 2015 and it has paid off. After a 48-28 season opener at Idaho, the 'Cats surrendered a total of 24 points over the next two games and come to Minneapolis with a perfect 3-0 record.
Minnesota isn't that far off a 3-0 mark itself. But then, it really isn't that far off 0-3 either.
Minnesota opened the season with a 23-17 loss against No. 2 TCU. It pulled out a 23-20 overtime win at Colorado State the next week and then edged Kent State 10-7 last week. Suffice it to say, this could be another day for the defenses.

NEVADA AT BUFFALO
Saturday, Sept,. 26, 3:30 p.m. ET
UB Stadium, Buffalo, NY

The Bulls only blemish is a 27-14 setback at Penn State. They rebounded from that with a 35-15 win over Florida Atlantic last week.
Nevada, on the other hand, started the campaign with a win over Cal-Davis (31-17), before dropping a pair to ranked teams -- No. 22 Arizona (44-20) and No. 17 Texas A&M (44-27).
The Wolfpack can score points. The question might be, how many will they give up. Buffalo is certainly capable of finding the end zone.

ARMY AT EASTERN MICHIGAN
Saturday, Sept. 26, 6 p.m.
Rynearson Stadium, Ypsilanti, MI

Despite a 1-2 record, the Eagles seem to be on the rise. Much of the optimism comes from a 48-29 win at Wyoming, but EMU had a good start against Ball State last week. The Eagles owned a 17-0 lead in the second quarter before Ball State scored 28 unanswered points. Looking at tape from that game probably won't help much as Eastern faces a completely different opponent and style this week when Army brings its option ground game to town. The Black Knights are 0-3, but the three losses were by a total of eight points. Last week's setback was a 17-14 decision to Wake Forest.

This is the first meeting between the two schools. UMass is still seeking its first victory after losses at Colorado (48-14) and at home against Temple, one of 2015’s surprise teams.

In the first two games of the 2015 season, the Akron Zips battled heat, humidity, and a driving rainstorm in losses to nationally-ranked Oklahoma on the road and Pittsburgh in the home opener.

Last Saturday, however, UA came up with its best performance of the young season, totally dominating the Savannah State Tigers in every facet of the game en route to a 52-9 victory – Akron’s first of the campaign.

This week, UA travels down to the bayou’s of Southwestern Louisiana. The Rajun Cajuns, out of the Sun Belt Conference evened their season at 1-1 last week with a home win over Northwest State (LA.)

RedHawks prepare for another big challenge

9/25/2015

PictureCan the Miami defense put pressure on Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty? (MRO/Mike Smith)
By MIKE SMITH
One thing is for sure about the Miami RedHawks defense heading into conference play next week: It will have been tested!
Miami will be at Western Kentucky Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. matchup against the Hilltoppers at L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green. That means another huge challenge for the RedHawks defense, which battled Cincinnati last week and Wisconsin the previous Saturday.
Wisconsin went badly for MU as the Badgers posted a 58-0 shutout on Miami. Cincinnati, on the other hand, was a very winnable game. MU actually had a three-point lead before allowing a late UC touchdown drive that resulted in a 37-34 Bearcat win in the rivalry.

SNEAK PEEK - MARSHALL AT KENT STATE

9/24/2015

Picture
By EVAN MEYER
In their history of football games against Big Ten opposition, the Kent State Golden Flashes have struggled. Some of those struggles turned urgly, such as  last season when KSU was obliterated by eventual national champion Ohio State, 66-0.

Then there was last Saturday in Minneapolis. The Blue and Gold came to play against a high-powered Golden Gophers attack. KSU scored a defensive touchdown and held one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten to under 200 yards passing. However, the Flashes offense did not fare well moving the football. That proved to be their downfall as they lost, 10-7, dropping their overall record to 1-2.

This Saturday the Flashes return to Dix Stadium (3:30 P.M.for their final non-conference game of the season. They face an old rival the Marshall Thundering Herd who are 2-1 on the season after defeating Norfolk State at home last week.

Sneak Peek: Bowling Green at Purdue

9/24/2015

Big Ten Network
Purdue has yet to beat Bowling Green, which owns a 2-0 advantage in the series.
Both teams enter with 1-2 records and are coming off losses. The Boilermakers lost at home to Virginia Tech last Saturday, 51-24. They also dropped their season opener at Marshall, 41-31. In between those setbacks, they downed Indiana State by a 38-14 count.
Bowling Green also came up short in its first and third games. Memphis edged the Falcons at Doyt Perry Stadium last week, 44-41.  Tennessee posted a 59-30 win in Nashville to open the campaign. Bowling Green’s lone victory thus far was a good one as BG battered Maryland, 48-27. A win at Purdue would give the Falcons two wins over Big Ten teams in the same season and give Bowling Green some momentum heading into conference play.

FOXBORO, Mass. - Despite a late touchdown reception by Jamal Wilson and 393 yards through the air from quarterback Blake Frohnapfel, the Massachusetts Minutemen dropped their home opener to Temple, 25-23 at Gillette Stadium Saturday afternoon.

"I am proud of the way the guys responded from last week. I didn't think that was the football team I had been coaching, and the assistant coaches did a nice job of getting the guys ready," head coach Mark Whipple said.

"They competed and found a way to get there at the end. We probably celebrated a bit too early and that can be happen. Credit Temple. They made the plays at the end of the game that you need to make and that's why we came up on the short end."

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Demetrius Monday returned a fumble 80 yards for a touchdown and added two interceptions, but the Kent State Golden Flashes’ offense failed to get on the scoreboard in a 10-7 loss to Minnesota Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.

Monday hit Minnesota's Rashad Still at the end of a 14-yard reception, forcing a fumble that he scooped up before racing down the Golden Gophers' sideline and into the end zone. The score cut Minnesota's lead to just three points with 9:44 to play in the third quarter.

Rockets go back-to-back on Power Five

9/20/2015

Picture
Toledo, OH  - For the second consecutive week, Toledo defeated a Power Five conference team in a game that went down to the final play. This time it was the Iowa State Cyclones of the Big 12 who fell to the Rockets, 30-23, in double overtime before a crowd of 23,104 at the Glass Bowl Saturday night.

A week earlier, Toledo (2-0) knocked off then-No. 18 Arkansas of the SEC in Little Rock. That game was decided in regulation, with Toledo holding on to a 16-12 decision.

It took two overtimes to settle the issue between the Rockets and Cyclones, with the contest ending on a fourth-down sack of Iowa State quarterback Sam Richardson by senior linebacker Tre James on fourth and nine.
