Fort Myers, Fla. – Two scoring droughts of over four minutes as well as poor free throw shooting doomed the Falcons in a 77-59 neutral site loss to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in game one of the 2015 Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic on Saturday evening at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Falcons connected on just 8-of-20 (40 percent) attempts from the free throw line for the game, while North Dakota was 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) overall from the charity stripe, a difference of 13 points at the foul line for the contest. CHICAGO, IL – Toledo (2-1) led by as many as 18 points in the first half on Saturday but couldn’t hold off a red-hot Loyola squad in the second half of a 69-62 defeat in Gentile Arena. The Ramblers (3-1)shot 59.1 percent and buried 6-of-9 three-point shots in the second half to fuel their comeback.
“We played a very good first half, but we didn’t sustain our defensive effort,” Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. “We knew Loyola would come right at us after halftime, and that’s what they did. Loyola is a veteran team, and the way we started the second half defensively ended up costing us.” RICHMOND, Ky. -- Ryan Weber scored 17 points Saturday and Franko House added 14 as the Ball State Cardinals defeated Longwood 78-67 at the @EKUHoops Classic.
The Cardinals (2-2) hit timely shots and got to the free throw line down the stretch to open up a game that was tied with six minutes to go. The team drained 24 of 28 free throws for the evening, including 9 for 10 from Weber and 7 for 7 from Jeremiah Davis. KENT, Ohio – Jimmy Hall scored 27 points and Kent State solved its problems from the foul line while pulling away late in a 79-72 win over Marist on Saturday night at the M.A.C. Center.
Marist grabbed a 68-65 lead with 2:56 to play on a three-pointer by Khallid Hart, but the Golden Flashes answer with an 8-0 run to pull ahead for good. Looking to snap a two-game losing streak, the Bulls saw their opponent get out to an early 13-6 lead. The Aggies continued to lead 23-16 with 10:28 left in the opening half when the Bulls went on a 13-0 run and never looked back. QB Woodson shines in win over Buffalo By EVAN MERYER AKRON, OHIO – Sophomore quarterback Thomas Woodson tied a career high with four touchdown passes -- all in the first half -- as the Akron Zips defeated the Buffalo Bulls 42-21 on a rainy, chilly late Saturday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium. With the victory, Akron (6-5, 4-3 MAC) becomes bowl eligible -- the sixth Mid-American Conference team in 2015 to reach that plateau. In addition, the victory marked the most by a UA team since 2005, when the Zips defeated Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship Game and played Memphis in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit. Defense, second half offense carry the day By MIKE SMITH AMHERST, Mass – After stumbling through a first half in which their offense totaled 41 yards, the Miami RedHawks rallied after intermission to post a 20-13 win over UMass Saturday at McGuirk Stadium. True freshman quarterback Billy Bahl, who completed just 3 of 9 passes for a total of 18 yards in the first half connected on 9 of 14 for 142 yards over the final two quarters. His 14-yard pass to freshman Chris Hudson with 7:32 left in the game provided the winning score and lifted MU to its first road win since Sept. 29, 2012 (22 straight losses). Still, it was Miami’s defense and a second-half run game that put the visitors in a position to win. By MIKE SMITH OXFORD, Ohio -- Florida Atlantic was a frequent visitor to the foul line at Millett Hall Saturday, and it knew what to do when it got there. The Owls canned 26 of 30 (86.7%), of their free throws to knock off hosting Miami 75-69 on the second day of action in the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge. It was the first victory of 2015 for Florida Atlantic (1-3), while Miami dropped to 2-2. YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Behind a record-setting shooting performance from junior Willie Mangum IV, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team (2-1, 0-0 MAC) cruised to a 79-34 victory over Siena Heights University Friday, Nov. 20 at the Convocation Center. The 34 points were the fewest given up by EMU since a 42-25 victory over Northern Illinois, Jan. 26, 2013. Eastern next faces its toughest test of the young season as it travels up to East Lansing, Mich. to battle No. 13/13 Michigan State, Monday, Nov. 23. The Eagles and Spartans will tip-off from the Breslin Center at 7 p.m. with the game airing on Big Ten Network. ST THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS -- Ohio shot 61.5 percent from the floor, including 8 of 10 from distance, to build a commanding 17-point halftime advantage, but Tulsa rallied in the second period for a 90-88 win Friday at the Paradise Jam. A Simmons layup and jordan Dartis three pulled Ohio within one with 10 seconds remaining. James Woodward made two free throws with six ticks left and UT fouled Simmons at 0:02. By MIKE SMITH Miami RedHawks head coach John Cooper expected the Lipscomb Bisons to come out firing, and they didn’t disappoint. Neither did the RedHawks. Keyed by a pressure defense, Miami came back from a seven-point second half deficit to post a 70-68 victory Friday night at Millett Hall. It was the first if three games in as many days for Miami as it plays host in the Coaches Against Breast Cancer Challenge. Lipscomp made 9 of 18 trey attempts on the way to a 38-36 halftime lead. “We knew they like to shoot the ball,” Cooper said. But “early in the first half, I didn’t think we did as great a job as we needed as far as getting to some of their shooters.” For its part, Miami (2-1) made good on 5 of 9 treys in the opening period, but it also made just 5 of 10 free throws. That didn’t hurt as bad as it might have because the Bisons (2-3) went 1 for 2 at the line before intermission. Their biggest lead before the break was six points RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Ball State Cardinals ran into a hot-shooting Eastern Kentucky squad Friday on the opening night of the @EKUHoops Classic as the host Colonels lit it up from 3-point range and the free throw line en route to an 89-81 victory at McBrayer Arena. By MIKE SMITH Neither the Miami RedHawks nor the Massachusetts Minutemen will be playing for a championship – or even bowl eligibility – Saturday. Each team has just two wins overall and one victory in the MAC win column. How important can one more win be? Probably pretty darn important. After all, a lack of wins doesn’t make victories less appreciated. Listen to a struggling school sing its fight song after a win and at least for a couple verses, you’d almost think it had been a championship at stake. Then, too, when the season is coming to an end, coaches and players would like to get some momentum heading into the offseason. UMass actually has two more games to play – its final home game Saturday against Miami and at Buffalo next Friday. For the RedHawks, Saturday brings down the curtain on 2015. It’s a long ride home if they lose and a happy ride back should they earn a victory. Here’s more on the two teams: By EVAN MEYER
After a stretch of losing three of four games, the Akron Zips have won two straight games to even their record at 5-5 overall and 3-3 in Mid-American Conference play. Last Saturday at Miami, UA built a 34-7 lead early in the third quarter only to see the RedHawks chip away, getting to within six points early in the fourth quarter before holding on for their fourth win on the road this season 37-28. The Akron Blue and Gold return this Saturday to InfoCision Stadium, where they are only 1-3 overall and 0-2 in MAC play. They host the Buffalo Bulls, who are also at 5-5 and 3-3 inside the conference. The winner becomes bowl eligible. |
