About Buffalo:
► Recent history suggests the Buffalo Bulls can be a downright scary team come tournament time. They are, after all, the two-time defending MAC tourney champs. A look at UB’s record suggests the Bulls should again be a team of which to be wary.
► The Bulls were 9-12 (3-5 MAC) in late January – coming off back-to-back one-point road losses at Miami and Akron. They then kicked it into gear to win six straight. But the team that broke that run was Kent State, who Buffalo meet’s in Thursday’s nightcap game.
► The Bulls suffered two losses in February. Both were on the home court and came during a three-day span during which UB fell to Kent State (77-69) and Akron (89-83). Buffalo then righted the ship to bump off Ohio and Bowling Green in its final two regular season tilts.
► UB and Kent State split the regular season series, with each team winning on the road. Buffalo won the first meeting, 82-69. C.J. Massinburg and Nick Perkins led the Bulls with 22 and 17 points, respectively. Jimmy Hall notched 24 points and 16 rebounds for the Flashes.
► Buffalo ranks third in MAC scoring (79.3 ppg and is second in scoring margin (+4.2).
► Four UB players own double figure scoring averages: Blake Hamilton (17.7), Massinburg (14.4), Willie Conner (13.1) and Perkins (12.1).
► Three Buffalo players earned MAC post-season recognition: Hamilton (Second Team), Massinburg (Honorable Mention, and Dontay Caruthers (Defensive Player of the Year).
About Kent State:
► KSU was one of the hottest MAC teams coming down the stretch. The Flashes won five in a row, including road wins at Akron, Buffalo and Bowling Green, before losing the season finale at home to UA.
► Kent State reached the quarterfinals by knocking off Central Michigan Monday in a game that is already being called a MAC tournament classic. The Flashes prevailed 116-106 in overtime. Jimmy Hall led KSU with 33 points and 13 rebounds as the hosts survived a 41-point night by Central’s Marcus Keene. Jalen Avery scored 17 of his career high points in overtime for Kent State.
► Hall, an All-MAC First Team selection, has thrived against UB this season. After his 24 points and 16 rebounds in the first meeting, Hall registered 26 points with 10 boards as KSU knocked off UB on the road 77-69 on Feb. 21.
► Hall is averaging a double-double with 18.7 ppg and 10.5 rpg – both team highs. Jaylin Walker (15.4 ppg) and Deon Edwin (13.4 ppg) are also double figure scorers. Edwin, a senior forward, also earned All-MAC Defensive Team honors.
