With the score tied at 65-65 and two minutes to play, Brown buried a pair of treys on back-to-back possessions. His first came with 1:54 showing on the clock and the second 41 seconds later.
Brown paced the Rockets (5-4) with 15 points as all five UT starters scored in double figures for the third time this season. Senior guard Justin Drummond contributed 13 points, while sophomore guard Jonathan Williams and senior forward J.D. Weatherspoon tallied 12 points apiece. Junior center Nathan Boothe registered 10 points as well as a career-high six assists. Weatherspoon also paced the Rockets with eight rebounds as Arkansas State held a slim 35-34 advantage on the glass.
Toledo shot 41.1 percent from the field and was 7-of-23 (30.4 percent) from three-point range. The Red Wolves (2-4) posted a 43.1 shooting mark and a 43.1 three-point field-goal percentage.
UT held a significant advantage at the charity stripe, converting 20-of-25 attempts (80 percent) compared to ASU’s 6-of-8 totals. The Rockets entered the contest ranked fifth nationally in free-throw percentage and are now at 77.7 percent this season.
Toledo trailed 40-26 with 2:40 to play in the first half but finished with an 11-2 spurt to take a 42-37 deficit to the locker room. Brown ignited the burst with a trey. Sophomore guard Jordan Lauf and Williams also buried treys during the rally.
UT took its first lead since the opening minute with 11 straight points for a 56-51 advantage with 11:50 to play. The Rockets couldn’t extend their lead any further, though, until Brown took over in the final two minutes.
Toledo concludes its three-game homestand on Wednesday, Dec. 17 with a 7:00 p.m. contest vs. Robert Morris (3-6).
