KENT, OHIO – The Kent State Golden Flashes changed quarterbacks after intermission, and their fortunes followed as junior QB George Bollas led KSU to a 17-14 homecoming victory over Miami at Dix Stadium.
Bollas, who came into the game on the first drive . . .
The first went to sophomore RB Justin Rankin from four yards out, completing a drive that pulled the hosts within four points at 14-10 midway through the third stanza.
“I loved the resiliency of this team.’ Golden Flashes head coach Paul Haynes said. “This was team win.”
While the Flashes broke their slide, Miami (2-5, 1-2 MAC) continued a losing streak that has reached three straight (and four of the last five outings).
As in several other setbacks this season, it was a game that slipped away from the RedHawks. The first half was totally Miami as it opened a 14-3 lead.
Junior quarterback Billly Bahl, starting for injured junior Gus Ragland, had a mixed day. Both Miami touchdowns came on Bahl passes, but he also threw two interceptions while completing 12 of 29 for 174 yards.
Miami’s first score went to James Gardner on a 13-yard fade pass. The junior had 67 yards on three catches, Tight end Ryan Smith pulled in MU’s other score on a 2-yard pass just before intermission. Smith totaled four receptions on the day.
The RedHawks also benefitted from productive performances by running backs Kenny Young and Alonzo Smith, who finished the game with 96 and 83 yards, respectively.
After KSU quickly grabbed the momentum after intermission and moved in front by the end of the third quarter.
Despite struggling over the final two quarter, Miami had a late chance to tie or take the lead as they drive the ball to the Flashes eight yard line. Bahl threw into the end zone three times, but each fell incomplete. On fourth down sophomore Pkicker Sam Sloman missed a 26-yard field goal, pushing it to the right.
