With the game pitting the offense, wearing Green, against the defense, donning Gray, a specialized scoring system was used. The offense earned one point for a first down, three points for a field goal, six points for a touchdown, and one point for a PAT. On the other side of the ball, the defense earned two points for a stop on downs, five points for a turnover, 11 points for a defensive touchdown, one point for a PAT, and three for a fourth down stop.
In the opening minutes of play, neither side of the ball could pull ahead, as the two teams remained close. However, after a few drives, the Green team rumbled into the red zone and a 32-yard field goal from redshirt sophomore Paul Fricano made it a 7-4 game with the Green team in front.
However, the Gray team quickly responded just a few possessions later. After the Green team appeared to be poised to march down the field once again, the defense forced a big fumble and Holford came up with the recovery, adding five points to the Gray column and tying things up at 11.
The defense continued controlling the game in the next few minutes, as a stop on downs gave the Gray team its first lead, 13-11. Despite a big sack from Pickett forcing the Green team into poor field position, redshirt junior Blake Banham was able to find a gap and rush for 11 yards to set up a big first down, cutting the Gray lead to 13-12.
