Senior guard Julius Brown paced UT’s attack with 19 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Rockets were senior forward J.D. Weatherspoon (14 pts.), sophomore guard Jonathan Williams (13 pts.) and senior guard Justin Drummond (11 pts.).
Weatherspoon also shared team rebounding honors with sophomore guard Jordan Lauf as each grabbed eight boards. That didn’t offset the Ducks’ advantage on the glass, though, as the hosts took advantage of Boothe’s and Garber’s absence with a 46-36 rebounding cushion.
Boothe entered the game as the Rockets’ leading scorer with 18.5 ppg, but he was limited to just two points and four rebounds in 16 minutes. Garber tallied two points and three boards in 15 minutes.
Toledo shot 37.9 percent from the field and 11-of-27 (37.9 percent) behind the three-point arc. The Ducks posted a 41.3 FG%, a 33.3 3PTFG% (6-of-18) and converted 20-of-24 free-throw attempts. UT was just 7-of-13 (53.8%) from the charity stripe.
Oregon held a 36-34 halftime advantage and didn’t relinquish it the remainder of the contest. The Rockets remained within striking distance and a Lauf free throw brought UT within six, 69-63, with 2:39 to play. However, a pair of Benjamin dunks on the next two possessions gave the Ducks a 10-point lead from which Toledo couldn't recover.
The Rockets return to Savage Arena on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 24-25 for a pair of home games as part of the Progressive Legends Classic Sub-Regional. UT will battle Bucknell (1-2) on Monday at 7:00 p.m. and either Detroit (1-2) or Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-2) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
