Late Gopher TD gives Ohio its first loss

9/28/2015

The Ohio Bobcats brought an unblemished 3-0 record to Minneapolis Saturday. For much of the game, it looked as though they might leave with an unblemished 4-0 mark.

Ohio bumped its fourth quarter lead to 24-20 on a Josiah Yazdani 41-yard field goal with 2:36 remaining. Minnesota, however, responded with a 78-yard drive that culminated in a Shannon Brooks three-yard TD run with 30 seconds remaining.  That proved to be the difference in a 27-24 Golden Gophers victory.

The Bobcats nearly pulled out the victory anyway as Daz'mond Patterson returned the ensuing kickoff 56-yards to the Minnesota 43.  Two incompletions, followed by a short seven-yard throw moved the ball to the UM 36, where Ohio called time out. Yazdani was sent in to try a 53-yard field goal, but Minnesota called a time out before the hike. When Yazdani ended up kicking the ball anyway, Ohio was hit with a five-yard delay of game penalty. It was enough to forego any kick, and the 'Cats tried a desperation pass play, which was broken up to seal the verdict.

Ohio took an early lead when Derrius Vick hit Papi White on a 39-yard scoring pass to cap off the Bobcat's second possession.

Minnesota immediately responded with a six-play, 87-yard TD drive. Shannon Brooks covered the last 40 yards on a run that knotted the score at 7-7.

The two teams again traded touchdowns with their next possessions. Ohio grinded out a 13-play drive that ended with Vick hitting Sebastian Smith on a 10-yard TD. Minnesota came back with a Leidner one-yard run, and it was 14-all at intermission.

Ryan Santoso's 49-yard field goal was the only scoring of the third quarter, giving UM its only lead of the game (17-14) before the final minute.

Cody Grilliot forced a fumble as Minnesota received a punt on the first play of the fourth quartr. Keith Heitzman recovered and returned it 24 yards to the Minnesota 47. With a penalty added, OU took over at the Minnesota six. The Bobcats drew a quick five-yard penalty themselves, but A.J. Quiellette made it academic when he covered 11 yards for a TD on the next play.

With the PAT, Ohio led 21-17. The two teams then traded field goals before Minnesota cashed in with the winning touchdown on its final possession.
