Prepped at Mentor High School where he was First Team All-State and recorded 55 tackles, 11.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 33 quarterback hurries as a senior and was a four-star recruit coming out. Recorded 37 tackles, including five for a loss, two sacks and recovered two fumbles as a junior. Lake and Geauga Defensive Player of the Year, invited to Army All-America Bowl, Under Armour All-America Bowl, Big 33 Bowl and played in the North-South Game. Also lettered twice in basketball.

Prior to Ohio – Played wide receiver, safety and punter at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School and logged 60 total tackles, five pass breakups and a quarterback sack as a safety. He also had 768 yards on 37 catches and 54 rushing yards. He holds the school record in catches (174), receiving yards (2,885) and touchdowns (38). He also recorded the second-highest single game tackle total with 20. He was named Esmark All-American, Honorable Mention All-State, Cleveland All-Star Team, First Team All-District twice, First Team All-Conference three times, was named team MVP twice and served as team captain for two years. He led his team to a 10-2 finish as a sophomore and a trip to the regional quarterfinals and a conference championship, 8-3 his junior year and 7-3 as a senior. Also lettered two years in basketball.
