Redshirt sophomore guard Jaaron Simmons (Dayton, Ohio) put together a huge week to help the Ohio men's basketball team (13-7, 4-4 MAC) go 2-0 on the fourth week of Mid-American Conference play. The redshirt sophomore guard averaged a whopping 12.5 assists per to go along with 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 0.5 steals per game. Simmons tied the school and conference record with 17 assists and recorded his fourth double-double of the 2015-16 season with 12 points as Ohio held on for a wild 81-79 win over MAC West Division foe Toledo last Tuesday (Jan. 26) at Savage Arena in Toledo,
Ohio. recorded eight assists in the first half and nine in the second. He went 4-of-8 from the field and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe and finished with five rebounds and a steal while playing all 40 minutes. Simmons matched the school-record 17 assists set by guard D.J. Cooper on Jan. 5, 2013. Simmons and Cooper share the conference record for assists in a game with Eddie Schilling of Miami (Feb. 4, 1987 vs. Kent State) and Todd Dietrich of Western Michigan (Jan. 10, 1979 vs. Eastern Michigan).
He followed the record-tying performance up by recording a game-high eight assists while tallying nine points as the Bobcats cruised to a 72-61 win over MAC East Division rival Kent State last Friday (Jan. 29) in a nationally televised contest in front of 6,713 fans at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio. He went 3-of-8 from the field and finished with five rebounds in 34 minutes. Through 20 games in 2015-16, Simmons leads the Bobcats and the MAC with 7.8 assists per game -- good for third in the NCAA.
He also ranks second on the squad with 14.3 points per game and also leads the team in steals per game (1.0), free throws made per game (4.9), free throws attempted per game (6.6) and minutes played per game (35.4). He also led the team in assists in every game and has tallied at least five assists in all but two contests -- three games with double-digit assists. In MAC play, Simmons is averaging a team-high 7.8 assists per game and ranks second on the squad with 14.0 points per game. The Bobcats continue their three-game homestand at the Convocation Center when they face MAC East Division rival Akron on Tuesday (Feb. 2) in a televised 7 p.m. ET matchup on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel and ESPN3.

Chris Fowler, Central Michigan

Senior guard Chris Fowler averaged 24 points, 7.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals last week, leading Central Michigan to two double-digit conference wins and into a first place tie in the MAC West Division. In a 68-51 road win over Miami on Tuesday, Fowler just missed a double-double, totaling 21 points, including scoring 11 on 100% shooting from the free throw line, and nine assists.
In a 77-65 home win over Bowling Green, Fowler spearheaded the effort for a series sweep, posting a season-high 27 points, including 21 in the first half. He shot 64% from the field (9-of-14), was 1-for-1 from three-point range and made 8-of-10 free throw attempts. Fowler also totaled five assists, four rebounds and three steals. After missing the first seven games due to injury, Fowler, who ranks fourth in the NCAA among active players and eighth all-time in MAC history with 617 career assists, has averaged 16.1 points, 6.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game since his return. He has scored in double figures in 13 of 14 games, including five 20-plus point performances, and is shooting a career-best 82.3% from the free throw line.
