Offensive Player of the Week: Buffalo QB Drew Anderson
Buffalo junior quarterback Drew Anderson (Orinda, Calif.) threw for a school and MAC single-game record 597 yards and seven touchdowns and added another touchdown on the ground in a 71-68 7-OT loss to Western Michigan. His seven touchdowns also tied the single-game MAC record. Anderson completed 35-of-61 pass attempts and didn’t throw a single interception. Anderson had four completions of 53 yards or more in the game and threw touchdown passes of 64, 8, 54, 5, 25, 4 and 27 yards. He also added a 2-yard touchdown run in the sixth overtime to extend the game.
Defensive Player of the Week: Bowling Green LB Brandon Harris
Bowling Green junior linebacker Brandon Harris (East Cleveland, Ohio) secured the Falcons first win of the season in a 37-29 win at Miami. With 1:21 remaining in the game, Miami trailed by just one point and had a first-and-goal at the Bowling Green one-yard line. On the next snap, Harris scooped up a fumble and returned it 93 yards for a touchdown. The score, which was Bowling Green’s longest play of the season, prevented a go-ahead touchdown, and iced the game for the Falcons. Harris also added six tackles and a quarterback hurry in the win.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Akron P/K Nick Gasser
Akron junior punter/kicker Nick Gasser (Liberty Township, Ohio) had a busy day in Akron’s 31-3 win over Ball State. He punted six times for 270 yards (45.0 average) with a career long 59-yard punt. Gasser also kicked off six times for 366 yards (61.0 average) with two touchbacks.
West Division:
Offensive Player of the Week: Western Michigan RB Jarvion Franklin
Western Michigan senior running back Jarvion Franklin (Tinley Park, Ill.) had four touchdowns and 176 yards on 37 carries in the Broncos' historic 71-68 7-OT victory at Buffalo. Franklin ran for 12 yards and spun off a defender to score the game's winning touchdown in the 71-68 victory. The game set a record for most points scored in FBS history and tied for the most overtimes ever. Franklin had just four yards rushing at the half, but was the Broncos' go-to on offense late in the game. He accounted for three of Western Michigan's touchdowns in extra play, scoring all three on the ground, and had 102 yards of the Broncos' 163 total yards in overtime. He also had a 20-yard receiving touchdown in the third quarter. Franklin's four touchdowns in the game gave him 51 overall career touchdowns, tying last year's No. 5 overall NFL draft pick Corey Davis for the school record for overall career TDs. It was Franklin's second 100-yard rushing game of the season. He additionally surpassed 4,000 career rushing yards, becoming just the third Bronco ever to reach the milestone.
Defensive Player of the Week: Northern Illinois DE Sutton Smith
Northern Illinois sophomore defensive end Sutton Smith (St. Charles, Mo.) totaled 10 tackles, three sacks and four tackles for loss in a 24-3 win over Kent State. Smith leads the entire FBS in sacks and tackles for loss. While Smith did most of his damage in the Golden Flashes backfield, taking down quarterbacks for losses of 21 yards in sacks while totaling 24 yards in TFLs, he also made 10 total stops to record his single game career high. More than half of Smith’s 28 tackles this year (14.5) have been for loss and his seven sacks on the year have surpassed the total of last year’s NIU season leader.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Central Michigan DB Sean Bunting
Central Michigan sophomore Sean Bunting (Clinton Township, Mich.) made a key special teams play that turned the game in a 26-23 win at Ohio. Bunting returned a missed field goal 60 yards for a touchdown with no time on the clock to pull Central Michigan within one point of Ohio, 14-13, entering halftime. Bunting, also a starting cornerback, had nine tackles against the Bobcats.
