OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team put forth their most complete performance of the season on Tuesday night as the Bulls evened their Mid-American Conference record to 1-1 with a 90-62 victory at Miami.
The Bulls shot 60.7% from the floor in the opening half as they took a 47-28 lead into the break. Junior Jeenathan Williams scored seven of the first nine points for UB as the Bulls opened the game on an 11-2 run. Another triple from Williams gave Buffalo its first double digit lead at 20-10, just over nine minutes in.
Buffalo led by as many as 21 points in the first half as the Bulls took a 47-28 lead into the break. During the opening half, the Bulls shot 81.3% from two-point range (13-of-16) as Williams had 13 points during the first 20 minutes of play.
Back to back threes from Jayvon Graves and Ronaldo Segu quickly increased the UB lead to 58-30 just over three minutes into the second half. Miami had cut the Buffalo lead to 67-46, but the Bulls answered with 11 straight points to take their largest lead of the game at 78-46 with 7:04 left.
11 players found the scoring column, led by Williams who finished with a game-high 21 points, while also finishing with a game-best four assists and adding six rebounds. Graves added 13 points and seven boards and senior David Nickelberry had a career high 12 points, while adding five boards and three dimes.
The UB defense allowed Miami to shoot just 33.8% from the floor and 24% from three-point range. Isaiah Coleman-Lands led the RedHawks with 12 points, followed by Mekhi Lairy’s 10.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's basketball team fell 81-74 to St. Bonaventure at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Loren Cristian Jackson led the Zips' scoring efforts with 22 points and seven assists. Jackson only scored four points by intermission as the Zips had plenty of open looks, but the shots just wouldn't fall. Akron (1-1) was 2-of-17 from deep and 9-of-28 from the floor in the first 20-minutes of the game. On the other side of the floor, St. Bonaventure (1-0) shot 15-of-39 from the field and only 1-of-10 from long distance, able to establish a 36-25 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Akron's shooting improved as Jackson poured in 18 points and senior Camron Reece added a 10-point effort. Reece finished the game with 12 points and five rebounds. Senior Maishe Dailey also corralled five boards while sophomore Jermaine Marshall led the Zips on the glass with a career-high nine rebounds. Marshall and sophomore Ali Ali chipped in nine points each.
The Bonnies scored 56 points in the paint as Osun Osunniyi led St. Bonaventure with 25 points. Dominick Welch and Kyle Lofton recorded 18 and 17 points, respectively. The Bonnies forced 17 turnovers which reculted in 11 points.
