Kent, Ohio - Kent State extended its record 4-0 this afternoon beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 94-68. This is the first time the Flashes have been 4-0 since the 2019-20 season when the team went 20-12 overall.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff took off right away scoring the first points of the game. The Flashes were adjusting and finding their rhythm; when they did, it was evident. Miryne Thomas helped the team create the energy they needed to get into the game. Thomas cleaned the glass recording a double-double of 13 rebounds and 10 points. Both teams had their chance at the free throw line, but the Flashes were nearly perfectly, shooting 87 percent from the line.
The Flashes' offense performance could not only be credited to one player. Five Golden Flash players recorded double-digits in points. Sincere Carry and Giovanni Santiago posted a team-high 17 points each.
Despite Golden Lions' Shaun Doss Jr. recording a game-high 29 points, the Flashes' defense deserved high praise recording a team-high 43 rebounds.
TOLEDO, Ohio – Senior JT Shumate tied his career high with 33 points and junior RayJ Dennis tallied 17 points and a career-best 12 assists to propel the Toledo men's basketball team to a 112-90 non-conference victory over Oakland on Wednesday evening in Savage Arena.
Shumate and Dennis were joined in double digits by senior Setric Millner Jr. (21 pts., 8 reb.) and sophomore Dante Maddox Jr. (20 pts.).
The Rockets shot 62.5 percent from the field, including a scorching 75.8 percent in the first half. UT was nearly as hot from three-point range, hitting 14-of-26 attempts (53.3 percent) from behind the arc. Toledo's 14 treys were one more than it made in its first two games. Shumate was 15-of-21 from the field, Millner knocked down 9-of-12 shots, while Maddox connected on 8-of-10 attempts.
"The flow of the game was crazy for us," Shumate said. "It felt like we weren't missing a whole lot. We were crashing the offensive boards and a lot of shots were going in."
The Rockets also dominated the boards by a 47-30 margin with junior Tyler Cochran grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. Millner and junior AJ Edu each grabbed eight boards.
Toledo scored the game's first six points and never looked back. A 12-0 spurt put the Rockets in front 23-8 with 14:03 remaining in the first half. UT's lead grew to as many as 24 points before settling for a 57-37 halftime advantage.
Oakland closed to within 11 points with 10:53 remaining but the Rockets responded by scoring 10 unanswered points to put the game away.
DETROIT, Mich. – The Ohio men's basketball team (1-2) returned to action Wednesday night (Nov. 16), falling, falling to Detroit Mercy (2-1), 88-74, inside the Calihan Hall.
Overall, Ohio shot 45.3 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from three and were 10-of-12 from the line, while Detroit Mercy shot 51.7 percent from the field, 42.3 percent from three and were 17-of-21 from the line. Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds, while the Titans dished out 14 assists to Ohio's nine. Ohio also forced 12 turnovers, while committing 15.
Individually, senior guard DeVon Baker (Dayton, Ohio) scored 16 points, while sophomore forward AJ Clayton scored a career-high 15 points and grabbed four rebounds. Senior guard Miles Brown added 12 points, while graduate student forward Dwight Wilson III scored eight points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Detroit Mercy scored 13-straight to take a 31-16 lead with 7:18 left in the first half and the hosts took a 47-34 advantage into intermission.
Ohio opened the second half with a three from Clayton to cut the lead to 10, however, after trading baskets, the Titans increased their lead to 62-41 going into the media timeout. Out of the timeout, the teams traded baskets, however, Ohio was unable to cut into the lead, trailing 69-47 with 11 minutes to go in the game.
Out of the timeout, with the help of five points each from senior forward Ben Roderick (Roderick) and Clayton, the Bobcats were able to make a small run, cutting their deficit to 74-57 with seven minutes remaining in the game.
The Bobcats kept battling, cutting the Titans lead to nine with 1:24 remaining. After Detroit Mercy hit a couple free throws, the Titans were able to increase their lead back to 12 with 39 seconds remaining. However, Ohio was unable to cut into the lead anymore falling 88-74.
For Detroit Mercy, Antoine Davis scored 28 points, while Jayden Stone scored 15 and grabbed five rebounds.
OMAHA, Neb. – The Ball State men's basketball team returned to the court for a Wednesday night contest against Omaha. Jalen Windham led the Cardinals with a game-high 15 points as a total of four Cardinals scored in double figures in a 71-61 victory.
Ball State improved to 2-1 on the season, while Omaha fell to 1-3. Windham led the way for the Cardinals with a season-high 15 points as he shot 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the 3-point line. Demarius Jacobs recorded his third-straight game in double figures as he notched 12 points to go along with his team-high four assists and his three steals. Jaylin Sellers produced his first game in double digits with an 11-point effort, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Sellers added three steals. Jarron Coleman led the team with nine rebounds and added 11 points with three steals.
The game started out slow for the Cardinals as they were held to just three points in the first five minutes of play. The Mavericks utilized that to their advantage and jumped out to an early 9-3 lead.
Ball State started to get the ball inside and saw lots of success The Cardinals went on to end the half on an 18-8 run as BSU took a 37-27 lead into halftime.
Ball State came out strong in the second half and started the stanza on a 12-4 run as the Cardinal lead grew to 49-31 with 15:31 left in regulation.
Omaha went on a 17-8 run and cut the Ball State lead down to nine, 57-48, with 6:13 left in the game. The game was a back-and-forth battle the remainder of the contest as the Cardinals leave Nebraska with a 71-61 victory. Ball State relied on 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line, despite not scoring a field goal the final 4:11 of the game.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 94.1 percent from the free-throw line. Ball State held Omaha to 35 percent from the field. The Cardinals held the Mavericks' leading scorer, Frankie Fidler, to just six points after he came into the game averaging 15.7 points.
JJ White led the Mavericks with 15 points and a team-high five assists. Marquel Sutton was the only other Omaha player to finish in double digits with 10 points. Kennedy Brown paced the Mavericks with a game-high 10 rebounds.
