BOWLING GREEN, OH -- If there were style points, they probably would go to Bowling Green's defense and/or special teams. In any case, a win is a win, and the Falcons finished 2021 in the win column Friday when they defeated Ohio 21-10 at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
The two teams scored just one touchdown apiece, but BGSU kicker Nate Needham kicked four field goals and the Falcons added a safety while moving their season record to 4-8 overall (2-6 MAC). Ohio fell to 3-9 (3-5 MAC) in new head coach Tim Albin's first year at the helm.
Bowling Green out-gained the visitors 349-223 overall and the Bobcats committed three turnovers while picking up just 10 first downs. The Bobcats were 2 of 11 on third down conversions and 1 of 3 on fourth down tries.
Bowling Green had a modest 94 yards on the ground, with Nick Mosley and Taron Keith combining for 25 carries and 69 yards. However, Matt McDonald connected on 24 of 37 pass attempts totaling 255 yards and a TD. Austin Osborne caught eight balls for 79 yards and a touchdown to lead Falcon receivers. Cabon Croom contributed six catches for 67 yards.
Needham opened scoring midway through the first quarter with a 23-yard field goal. However, Ohio responded with 10 straight pints to take lead. Amani Rogers' 1-yard run at 14:17 or the second quarter made it 7-3 and Stephen Johnson followed with a 22-yard field goal on Ohio's next possession.
Bowling Green knotted the score at 10-all with a nine-play, 70-yard drive on the following possession. McDonald's 14-yard pass to Osborne finished the journey.
Another Needham field goal (43 yards) was the only scoing in the third quarter, but it moved the hosts in front for good.
A promising Bowling Green drive early in the final frame stalled out when the Falcons were unable to convert a fourth down inside the five. Ohio took over, but was flagged for a penalty before Amani Rogers was tackled in the endzone for a safety.
BGSU added field goals on its next two drives possessions and both Ohio drives ended on interceptions.
