DeKALB, IL - The Huskies forced three turnovers and held Ohio to 254 yards of offense as Northern Illinois (3-4, 2-1 MAC) knocked off Ohio (5-2, 2-1 MAC) Saturday at Huskie Stadium.
Ohio, a preseason favorite in the MAC East, entered the weekend with a 2-0 conference mark. After NIU drew first blood on a 53-yard Gavin Williams TD midway through the opening period, Ohio ran off the next 13 points for a 13-7 halftime advantage.
That, however, would be the end of Ohio scoring. Rocky Lombardy hit Grayson Barnes on a 58-yard TD at 12:54 of the third period and Kanon Woodill added three field goals (31,37,32).
Lombardy completed 15 of 23 passes, good for 172 yards and one TD. Williams led the ground attack with 10 carries totaling 55 yards with one score. The Huskies produced 130 yards rushing.
Ohio, meanwhile, was limited to 95 yards rushing, with O'Shaan Allison and Sieh Bangura combining for 21 carries and 77 yards.
Quarterback Kurtis Rourke ran five times for 18 yards and a TD. He also completed 22 of 36 passes, good for 159 yards. However, he tossed three interceptions on the day.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University football team got on the scoreboard first and never looked back on its way to a 28-14 victory over Kent State University inside 'The Factory' at Rynearson Stadium, Oct. 14.
The Eagles improved to 4-3 on the year and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play while the Golden Flashes fell to 1-6 and 0-3.
Samson Evans (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge/Iowa) paced the Eagles rushing attack by accumulating 47 yards and two touchdowns over the course of the game. Evans' 47 yards brought him past the 2,000-yard mark for his career as the graduate student now stands with 2,015 yards in his career. Jaylon Jackson (Burleson, Texas/Centennial/Lamar) also added 43 yards on the ground.
Austin Smith's (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove) most prolific target in the ballgame was Tanner Knue (Mason, Ohio, Mason), who caught five passes for 85 yards and one score. Knue's 85 yards are the most by any Eagles receiver in a single game in 2023.
A surprising move to start the contest led to an ultra-quick score as Kent State's on-side kick was run back for a 44-yard TD by DB Kendrick Nowling.
Eastern Michigan grew its lead to 14-0 after scoring the game's first points from scrimmage with 0:44 left in the second quarter, an Evans 19-yard TD run. The Eagles then followed with another score with 7:02 to go in the third, extending the EMU lead to 21-0 as Smith floated a ball right into the hands of Knue in the far corner of the endzone for a TD.
Kent State then scored to make it a 21-7 game, but Eastern Michigan responded with 9:28 left in the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 28-7 as Evans plowed in from three yards out for his second score of the day. Central Michigan held Akron to under 200 yards in total offense and the Chippewa offense did just enough on Saturday as CMU defeated the Zips, 17-10, at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
The Chippewas improved to 4-3, 2-1 MAC and bounced back from a 37-13 loss last week at Buffalo. They are tied for second place in the MAC West, one game behind first-place Toledo. Akron dropped to 1-6 (0-3 MAC).
The Chippewas threw two interceptions against the Zips after committing four turnovers last week at Buffalo. The difference against the Zips was that CMU made two interceptions, the second of which came on Akron's first drive of the third quarter and put the Chippewas at the Zip 30-yard line.
Four plays later, quarterback Jase Bauer scored on a 5-yard run to put the Chippewas in front, 10-3.
CMU went up 17-3 with 1:01 to play in the third quarter when Myles Bailey scored on a 2-yard run to cap an 18-play, 75-yard drive that milked more than nine minutes off the clock.
It was CMU's longest drive of the season in terms of possession time, and it tied its longest drive of the season for number of plays.
On the day, the Chippewas held the ball for nearly 16 minutes longer than did the Zips and had 21 first downs to the Zips' 10.
Akron drew to 17-10 when quarterback Jeff Undercuffler, who relieved starter Tahj Bullock in the second half, tossed a 14-yard TD pass to Alex Adams early in the fourth quarter.
But the Chippewa defense clamped down after that, holding Akron to just 43 yards in total offense and two first downs the rest of the way.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Brett Gabbert threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Miami RedHawks (6-1, 3-0 MAC) overcame two turnovers to post a 34-21 win over Western Michigan Saturday at Waldo Stadium.
It was the sixth straight win for MU, which hasn't lost since Week one against the Miami Hurricanes. With Ohio's loss to Northern Illinois Saturday, the RedHawks move into sole possession of first place in the MAC East. Ohio and Miami meet in two weeks, but the RedHawks must now turn their attention to next Saturday's battle against MAC West-leading Toledo. With its loss, Western Michigan falls to 2-5 (1-2 MAC).
Both of Gabbert's passing TDs came in the first period, and both went to Gage Larvadain, who finally returned to action following an injury in in Week Three. The first was a 9-yard strike at 9:18. After a 30-yard Palmer Domschke field goal at 3:39, Kevin Davis returned the following kickoff to the 47. A 42-yard pass to Cade McDonald put Miami at the Broncos 5-yard line and Gabbert hit Larvadain on the left side of the end zone two plays later.
The RedHawks next possession ended quickly a Gabbert was intercepted three plays into the drive. That set WMU up with a short field at the Miami 28. Three plays later, WMU faced fourth-and-one. Eschewing a field goal try, the decision paid off when Zahir Abdus-Salaam bounced off left tackle for a 19-yard TD.
Miami picked up two first downs on its next drive before again feeding the Broncos. Donald Willis fell on a RedHawk fumble and Western Michigan took over at the MU 33.
Miami's defense again forced fourth down, but this time with six yards to go. Western Michigan tried a 47-yard field goal, which was off the mark.
Having dodged points on the second turnover, Miami responded with a nine-play, 71-yard drive. Gabbert completed four passes along the way and finished the trip with a 4-yard run. With the PAT, MU took a 21-10 lead to intermission.
Domschke provide the third quarter's only score with a 49-yard field goal. The two teams then exchanged TDs early in the final stanza. Gabbert ran it in from nine yards out. WMU then answered with Hayden Wolff's 5-yard run at 10:59. His two-point conversion pass to Leroy Thomas pulled the hosts with seven at 28-21.
Wolff, who replaced Treyson Bourguet for the second half, seemed to energize the Broncos' aerial attack. Western Michigan had just 37 yards passing before intermssion. Wolff completed 13 of 20 for 99 yards in his time behind center. He also ran eight times for 23 yards with one TD.
A short Bronco punt gave Miami possession at midfield with 8:55 remaining and Gabbert quickly hit Javon Tracy for 27 yards. Althought MU could not get another first down, it was well within Nicholson's range and he nailed a 39-yarder with 6:00 left. That put the RedHawks up by 10 at 31-21.
Brian Ugwu's fourth down sack ended WMU's following drive at the Bronco 24. Four plays later, Nicholson connected on his final field goal -- this one from 40 yards. Nicholson, a junior, has hit all 13 of his field goal tries this season and is also perfect on PATs.
