ESTERO, Fla-- Led by Nike's Sibande's double-double, the RedHawks fought off a Bulldog challenge to post their fourth consecutive victory.
Sibande tallied 16 points with 11 caroms, with 12 of those points coming in the second half as MU pulled away from a one-point halftime advantage. Dalonte Brown tossed in 13 points and freshman Dae Dae Grant added 11.
MU held Drake, averaging nearly 80 ppg, to 59 points on 35.2 percent shooting. The Bulldogs actually shot a higher percentage (38.1%) from behind the arc.
Northern Illinois 74, Oakland 50
DEKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois earned its sixth-straight victory as the Huskies downed Oakland, 74-50, on Monday night at the NIU Convocation Center. Senior Eugene German scored a game-high 21 points while sophomore Trendon Hankerson added a career-best 14.
NIU (6-2) held the Golden Grizzlies to just 18.2 percent (4-of-22) shooting from the field in the second half. Oakland made 15 field goals overall in the contest while NIU made 13 triples.
NIU held Oakland without a field goal for over 10 minutes early in the second half and the Huskies shot 51.5 percent (17-of-33) after the intermission, including 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range, as they cruised to the 24-point victory.
Daniel Oladapo and Xavier Hill-Mais each scored 13 points to pace Oakland, Tray Maddox Jr. added 11 points off the bench.
Yale 73, Western Michigan 51
ORLANDO, Fla. – In its first game at the 2019 NIT Season Tip-Off on Monday the Western Michigan was unable to overcome a cold shooting performance in a 73-51 loss to Yale inside the HP Fieldhouse at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Broncos shot just 29.6 percent from the field and had just four three-pointers against the Bulldogs. WMU was 4-of-22 from the three-point line while being outrebounded by Yale, 44-26. Yale shot 45.3 percent from the field and knocked down 13 three-pointers.
Despite the low shooting percentage, the Broncos had four score in double figures with junior Michael Flowers leading the way with 16 points. Flowers was 4-of-16 from the field but 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Redshirt sophomore Jason Whitens posted his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds versus Yale. Whitens was a solid 5-of-8 from the field to go along with one assist and one three-pointer.
Redshirt junior Brandon Johnson nearly posted a double-double, as well, with 12 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Johnson was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe and had two steals and one block.
Rounding out the quartet of double digit scoring for WMU was senior Jared Printy with 12 points. Printy knocked down three of WMU’s four three-pointers while grabbing two rebounds.
No. 10 Ohio State 71, Kent State 52
COLUMBUS, Ohio- Despite a second-half surge by the Flashes that tied the game with 10 minutes remaining, Kent State (5-1) dropped its first game of the season to No. 10 Ohio State, 71-52 at St. John Arena Monday night.
The Buckeyes led by as many as 17 (40-23) before the Flashes rallied midway through the second, capping the rally with a 16-4 run that tied the game at 48. The spurt was fueled by a 3-pointer from Danny Pippen and a pair of threes from Antonio Williams.
The Buckeyes answered by scoring 17-straight points with 11 of those coming from the foul line. Ohio State held a big advantage at the free throw line, where they shot 22-of-30 compared to Kent State's 4-of-7.
Pippen scored a season-high 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor and 3-of-10 from long range. The forward grabbed eight boards and had two blocks to complete his night. Williams rounded out the Flashes double-figure scoring with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists.
Nevada 77, Bowling Green 62
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – Bowling Green was defeated by the University of Nevada, 77-62, Monday night in the Paradise Jam Championship Game.
The Falcons previously defeated Western Kentucky and Cincinnati at the event, earning a pair of top-85 wins in the process, but they ultimately fell short in the title game.
"They did everything extremely well. They had the energy and it showed tonight. We didn't have the same energy and the same juice that we've had in the previous two games." Falcons Head Coach Michael Huger said.
Bowling Green drops to 5-2 on the season with the loss. The Falcons out-scored the Wolf Pack in the second half by a 38-35 margin, but Nevada built up an 18-point lead at the half and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the final 20 minutes.
Nevada only shot 40.3 percent as a team, but converted on a lethal 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) attempts from downtown. The Falcons went 2-of-21 (9.5 percent) from three-point territory.
Junior forward Daeqwon Plowden led the Falcons with a team-high 13 points. Freshmen Chandler Turner (12), Dylan Swingle (9) and Davin Zeigler (5) each registering career highs scoring the basketball. Sophomore guard Caleb Fields added 10 points, while senior guard Michael Laster posted eight points and nine rebounds.
