The Kent State Golden Flashes are 0-2 following a 23-13 loss at home to the South Alabama Jaguars coming back from a 16-0 deficit to make it a one possession game early in the fourth quarter. The visitors, however, persevered and sent Kent State to defeat -- the second time in four years KSU has started a season at 0-2.
This Saturday, the Flashes travel to Columbus to battle nationally-ranked (#22) Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 1-1 on the season after losing their home opener last week to Virginia Tech.
Last Week:
South Alabama of the Sun Belt Conference opened a 16-0 halftime lead before a 44-yarder to TE Casey Pierce to closed the KSU deficit to 16-13 early in the fourth quarter.
KSU had a chance to tie the game but PK Anthony Melchiori missed a 32-yard field goal attempt with 8:26 remaining in regulation. USA iced the game with a touchdown with 1:02 remaining to make the final margin 10 points…
Kent State's Reardon was 17-of-40 through the air for 213 yards with the two touchdowns and one interception,,,RB Nick Holley had 47 yards rushing while Pierce and WR Chris Humphrey led the Flashes with four receptions each (Pierce 80 yards and a score – Humphrey 18 yards)…LB Matt Dellinger and Terance Waugh (a sack) led the defense with seven total tackles each (each had six solo stops)

Kent State looks to be in rebuilding mode in 2014 as the mainstays of their 2012 MAC East title team -- Dri Archer and Roosevelt Nix -- have graduated in . The Flashes were picked to finish fifth in the Eastern Division in the pre-season MAC poll and opened the 2014 campaign at home coming back from a 14-7 deficit to tie Ohio 14-14 with 3:34 remaining. The Bobcats the hit a 44-yard field goal on the final play of the game to escape with a 17-14 victory…This is the opening of a three-gane road trip for the Flashes. After a week off, they head to Virginia to play the ACC Cavaliers and then return to MAC play at Northern Illinois on October 4th…Their next home game does not come until October 11th against Massachusetts

Last Week:
Last Saturday, Ohio State lost to Virginia Tech at home, 35-21…The Buckeyes dropped their first home opener since 1978 and saw their 25-game regular season winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Hokies from the Atlantic Coast Conference before a record crowd of 107,517 at Ohio Stadium…VT opened a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second period, a pair of missed field goals by OSU proved to be a turning polint as the visitors scored just before halftime on a 10-yard pass from QB Michael Brewer to Bucky Hodge. OSU tied the game 21-21 early in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard scoring run by RB Ezekiel Elliott. However, the Hokies did not buckle and managed to add a score as Brewer and Hodges hooked up from 10 yards out. Donovan Riley clinched the game with a 63-yard interception of a J.T. Barnett pass for a touchdown…Barnett was just 9-for-29 on the evening with no touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for 70 yards, leading the Buckeyes in that category and a score.

Barrett who is playing for Braxton Miller (out for the season with a shoulder injury) leads OSU in both passing (21-of-44 for 445 yards wth three touchdowns and four interceptions) and in rushing 320 yards and a score)…Michael Thomas leads the receiving corps with nine over the first two games for 137 yards and two touchdowns…Defensively, LB Curtis Grant and LB Joshua Perry have 20 tackles each
Overview:
When fall camp opened last month, the Buckeyes and their fans felt they were going to be the team to beat in the Big Ten and possibly earn a spot in the new College Football Playoff. Those dreams came crashing down when two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Braxton Miller hurt his surgically repaired shoulder -- the same one he hurt in the loss to Clemson back in January in the Orange Bowl…The offense was handed to redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett, who had not played since 2012 back in high school…The Bucks opened the campaign in Baltimore against Navy and their triple option and used a big second half for a 34-17 victory over the Midshipmen…OSU is in a stretch of three of four at home. After the KSU game, they face Cincinnati before opening Big Ten Play at Maryland on October 4. It will be the Terrapins first ever Big Ten game

This is the third lifetime meeting between the two schools, with OSU winning the previous two (both at the Horseshoe). The most recent was in 2008, 48-3. . .
