MRO PREVIEW: Tulsa at Toledo

It should be a busy evening for both defenses when Tulsa and Toledo do battle in the Glass Bowl Saturday.
Hosting Toledo is averaging 42 ppg, while Tulsa has put up 45 ppg. The latter is also cranking out nearly 550 ypg to 489.5 ypg for Toledo.

Tulsa took it on the chin in a road opener, falling to No. 10 Oklahoma State 59-24. Although it surrendered 42 points in Week Two, the Golden Hurricanes nonetheless drilled Louisiana Lafayette 66-42. The two teams combined for 1,263 yards of offense.
 
TULSA GOLDEN HURRICANE (1-1)
● Tulsa has the smallest FBS enrollment with 3,406. Toledo’s enrollment is 20,648.
● Tulsa has an 8-3 record against MAC teams. It’s the third meeting between the two schools. Each team has won one game.
● The Golden Hurricane averaged 527.0 ypg to rank fourth nationally and seventh in NCAA scoring for the 2016 season. Tulsa rushed for over 300 yards eight times in 2016 – a new school record.
● Sophomore Chad President is settling into his role as a quarterback in a dynamic offense. He completed 70 percent of his passes (14 of 20) for 243 yards while picking up his first career passing and running TDs in the win over ULL.
● D’Angelo Brewer jumped to fourth place on the school’s all-time rushing chart with his 262-yard rushing performance Louisiana. He also had three TDs in the contest.
● Tulsa native Corey Taylor, a sophomore, registered 111 yards and two TDs on 20 carries.
● Among 54 players that have played in the first two games, Tulsa has used a total of 24 sophomores, red-shirt freshmen or true freshman.
● Junior McKinley Whitfield made a move from safety to linebacker this year. In his first game this season, Whitefield had a team-leading 10 tackles, including three stops for -9 yards. All 10 tackles were solos.
 
TOLEDO ROCKETS (2-0)
● The Rockets used a balanced offense to down Nevada 37-24 in their first road test of 2017 last week. Senior running back Terry Swanson totaled 101 yards and provided two touchdowns. Senior QB Logan Woodside threw for 232 yards and a pair of scores. Cody Thompson caught a career-high eight passes for 101 yards.
● On the season, Woodside has completed 65.5 percent of his passes and has yet to throw an interception.
● Junior Jameson Vest connected on 3 of 4 field goals last week. He currently leads the nation with 3.4 field goals per game.
● UT registered two second half turnovers against Nevada.
● Toledo controlled the ball against Nevada for 40:14.
● UT is sixth in the nation in kickoff returns and 10th in time of possession.
● Toledo has gone 14 straight games (and 33 of 34) without a fumble by a running back.
● The Rockets have three players with at least 137 yards, but Swanson  (4) is the only running back with a rushing touchdown. Six of eight Toledo touchdowns came via the ground game.
● Cody Thompson tops UT receivers with 13 receptions for 213 yards and a TD.
