MRO UPDATE: Eastern Michigan Eagles

Editor’s Note: This is part of a series checking on MAC teams before they enter Mid-American Conference play. All rankings are MAC, and there are 12 MAC teams)
 
COACH:  Rob Murphy (6th season)
​2014 RECORD: 21-14 overall (8-10 MAC, 4th place, West Division)
MAC TOURNEY: Defeated Miami (61-61, OT) and Bowling Green (73-67). Lost to Toledo 78-67 in quarterfinal action.
OTHER POST-SEASON: Lost at Louisiana Monroe 71-67 in CBI tournament first round.
 LEFT THE BUILDING
► Six letter-winners, including three starters, departed following last season. Mike Talley averaged12.5 ppg and 4.2 rpg. Karrington Ward also put up 12.5 ppg. He dished out 6.5 assists per contest. Tim Bond, meanwhile, chipped in 6.1 ppg).
 BACK FOR MORE:
►  Guard Raven Lee was a Third Team All-MAC selection last year when 
.  .  .  

.  .  .  he averaged a team high 16.7 ppg. (2nd best in MAC) and set a new high mark for most single season points by a sophomore (586). Lee, however, drew a suspension and missed roughly half of the 2015-16 non-conference schedule. He has been back for seven games.
Sophomore guard Ethan Alvano returns after averaging 3.4 ppg with 14.5 minutes an outing last season.
 
2015-16 RECORD: 8-5
► It’s been an up-and-down non-conference season. EMU managed a three game win streak midway through the stretch, but that brief ride ended with an 81-70 loss at Penn State. the Eagles enjoyed back to back wins against against Coppin State and Detroit before falling 82-77 at home to North Florida Jan. 2 despite putting six players in double figures.
► The Eagles 8-5 mark is fourth best among MAC West teams.
 
OTHER:
► The preseason media poll projected EMU to finish fourth in the MAC West.
► Eastern Michigan was joined by eight newcomers this year.
► Eastern Michigan averages 77.6 ppg, tied for third best in the MAC. It allows 69.7 ppg, sixth in the conference. The +7.9 scoring margin ranks fifth.
► EMU has made 43.9 percent (7th) of its shots overall, but is last in 3-point shooting (26.6%) and 3-pointers made (66). The Eagles are 10th in free throws (67.4%).
► Eastern is 11th in rebounding margin (-1.3) but first in turnover margin (+4.85).
► Five Eagles are currently averaging in double figures. Willie Mangum IV and James Thompson IV are both scoring at a 14.5 ppg. clip, while Thompson is actually averaging a double-double with his 10.9 rebounds per contest. Lee has averaged 13.0 ppg in his seven games since returning. Ty Toney and senior forward Brandon Nazione (6-8, 225) are both at 10.2 ppg, with the latter also contributing 7.1 rebounds per game, as well. Toney, a 6-2 junior guard, is dishing out 3.6 assists in 29.5 minutes of action.
► Eastern Michigan will hit the road for its first two games of MAC play. The Eagles are at Central Michigan Wednesday (7 p.m. ET) and travel to Northern Illinois Saturday (8:30 p.m. ET).
