ATHENS, OH -- Jaaron Simmons led with 20 points and Kenny Kaminski netted 17 as Ohio opened its season with an 85-75 victory over Florida Gulf Coast at the Convocation Center.
The visiting Eagles, trailing most of the game, closed within six at 76-70 late, but were forced to foul. Simmons, who scored 13 of his points at the stripe, hit seven of eight free throws to seal Ohio's win.
Mark Eddy Norelia led FGC with 21 points and nine rebounds. Wadly Mompremier posted a double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds) for the 'Cats' cause.
Ohio owned a decisive 45-31 advantage on the boards.
