PREVIEW: Akron at Marshall

The Akron Zips saw their six game winning streak, dating back to last season, stopped dead in its tracks by a nationally ranked Wisconsin team last Saturday.
This week, the Zips play the second of consecutive road games as they face a Marshall Thundering Herd team that shut out FCS member Morgan State in their opening game last Saturday

AKRON ZIPS (1-1)
 
LAST TIME OUT: Last Saturday, the Zips traveled to Madison, Wisconsin where they fell to the nationally ranked Wisconsin Badger 54-10 at Camp Randall Stadium. The Badgers, fresh off their upset of Louisiana State the previous week, held UA to just 224 yards of total offense.
In fact, the Zips lone score came on a punt return as fifth-year senior JoJo Natson took a Badgers punt late in the second quarter and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. 
Offensively, senior Warren Ball had 71 yards on just seven carries. Junior quarterback Thomas Woodson completed just 9-of-19 passes for 108 yards while junior WR Anthony Young led the receivers with four receptions for 32 yards.
Defensively senior DB Zach Guiser had eight total tackles (five solo) to lead the UA 11.
 
STATISITCALLY SPEAKING:
OFFENSE: UA is averaging 28.5 points and 400 yards per game
RUSHING: Warren Ball 25 carries-181 yards-one touchdown
PASSING: Thomas Woodson 32-51-2 615 yards 6 touchdowns
RECEIVING: Jerome Lane 13 receptions-239 yards two touchdowns
 
DEFENSE: The Zips are allowing 39 points and 486 yards per game
TACKLES: S James Turner (10 solo-6 assists-16 total) & Ulysses Gilbert

NOTES: JoJo Natson’2 55 yard punt return for a touchdown was UA’s first since 2004 when Domenik Hixon returned a punt 85-yards against Ball State…LB Ulysses Gilbert collected his first collegiate sack…P Nick Gasser had a career best 47-yard punt against the Badgers including a pair inside the opponents 20-yard line…RB Warren Ball had a 38-yard run the scond longest of his career he had a 43-yarder in the season opener against VMI…PK Nivk O’Leary made his first coillegiate field goal, a 32-yarder, jst before halftime. Coming into the game O’ Leary had missed his two previous FG attempts in 2004 at Penn State…UA head coach Terry Bowden & MU head man Doc Holliday were teammates at West Virginia
 
THE SERIES: The game is the 14th lifetime meeting between the two schools with the Thundering Herd holding a 9-4 advantage winning seven of the last nine meetings and all six in Huntington…Their last meeting came in 2004 at InfoCision Stadium, with the Herd picking up a 47-28 victory.
 
MARSHALL THUNDERING HERD (1-0)
 
LAST TIME OUT: Marshall opened the 2016 campaign last Saturday at home with a 62-0 win over Morgan State out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference…QB Chase Litton completed 13-of-16 passes for 309 yards and six touchdowns as MU had a 49-0 lead early in the third quarter. Overall the Herd amassed 530 yards of total offense. The Marshall defense held Morgan State to just 222 total yards and returned two fumbles for touchdowns. The win was Marshall’s six consecutive home opening victory.
 
NOTES: QB Chase Litton became the fourth quarterback in MU history to throw at least six touchdown passes in a game…TE Tony Yurachek’s 58-yard touchdown reception was the longest of his career…George Davis’ 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown was the longest in school history…PK Amoreto Curraj missed a PAT breaking a streak of 160 consecutive conversions dating back to November, 2013…Chase Litton leads the Football Bowl Subdivision with a 367.23 quarterback rating…MU’s defense has not allowed a point in its last 75 minutes of football, the last points coming in the third quarter of last season’s St. Petersburg Bowl.
