ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Among McElwain’s tasks for his first camp was sorting out a major quarterback competition. Thursday’s game could give at least some indication how that process has gone.
The Chippewas also faced a big challenge in rebuilding a defense that was hit hard by graduation.

ABOUT ALBANY
➤➤ The Great Danes finished 3-8 last season when Albany averaged 21.1 ppg and allowed 30.6 ppg. Injuries didn’t help as Albany finished last in the Colonial Athletic Conference.
➤➤ Sophomore quarterback Jeff Undercuffler got three starts last year and turned one of those into a win over rival Stony Brook (which made the FCS playoffs).
➤➤ If Undercuffler can take a big step forward, so can the Danes, especially if they can avoid key injuries. Several games went the other way last season in the final minutes. Turning those close ones into victories is one of the challenges for 2019.
➤➤ The offensive line is experienced and should open some holes for running back Karl Mofor (105 carries, 596 yards (5 TDs). Wideout Dev Holmes (51 catches, 725 yards, 5 TDs) is one of six returning receivers.
➤➤ After a 2-2 start, the Danes lost six straight before ending their campaign with a 25-23 win over Stony Brook.
