PREVIEW: Appalachian State at Akron

The Akron Zips used a total team effort as well as a 34-point second quarter to defeat the Marshall Thundering Herd, 65-38 last week. It was the second most points in school history for UA, which improved its record to 2-1 -- the Zips best after three games since 2005.
 
This Saturday, the Akron Blue and Gold complete the non-conference portion of their schedule as . . . 

. . .  the Mountaineers from Appalachian State (Sun Belt Conference) come to InfoCision Stadium. App State brings a 2-1 record after losing last Saturday at home to nationally ranked Miami (FLA).
 
AKRON ZIPS (2-1)
 
LAST TIME OUT:
Last Saturday, the Zips completed their two-game road trip with a stop in Huntington, West Virginia where they routed the Marshall Thundering Herd 65-38. It was UA’s third win in their last four road games dating back to last season and their first ever win over the Herd in Huntington. 
Junior QB Thomas Woodson completed 21-of-32 passes for 379 yards and four touchdowns, along with a rushing score. Manny Morgan, pressed into service due to other Zips injuries, had a career day with 130 yards on 18 carries. Senior WR JoJo Natson had seven receptions for 134 yards, while junior WR Jerome Lane also had seven catches for 115 yards.
 
Overall the Zips offense amassed 524 yards of total offense. The defensive 11 scored two touchdowns of their own, led by LB Ulysses Gilbert who had 10 total tackles (three solo) he also recovered a blocked punt and raced 30 yards for a score. Along with the two defensive touchdowns, the Zips defense notched four turnovers (three interceptions and a fumble recovery)
 
ZIPS SEASON TO DATE: The Zips opened the 2016 season on September 3rd  at Infocision Stadium with a 47-24 win over FCS member Virginia Military Institute from the Southern Conference.  In week two UA lost at nationally ranked Wisconsin 50-14 as the Badgers dominated the contest in every facet of the game

OFFENSE: UA is averaging 40.7 points and 441.3 yards per game
RUSHING: Warren Ball 25 carries-181 yards-one touchdown
PASSING: Thomas Woodson 53-83-2, 894 yards, 10 touchdowns
RECEIVING: Jerome Lane 20 receptions,-354 yards, two touchdowns
 
DEFENSE: The Zips are allowing 38.7 points and 486 yards per game
TACKLES:  Ulysses Gilbert (14-12-26)
TACKLES FOR LOSSES:  Jamal Marcus 4-19 yards
SACKS:  Marcus 2-7 yards
INTERCEPTIONS: Three with one (Guiser, Brown, Lloyd)

NOTES:
A is 7-1 in its last eight games dating back to last season and have won the last three games at home…With a win Saturday they would be 3-1 for the first time since 1992…JoJo Natson was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week…Mychal Traylor-Bennett and Kwadarrius Smith each scored their first collegiate touchdowns…The 34-point second quarter at Marshall was the third most in school history…The 65 points was the second most in school history (66 vs. Morgan State-2012) and the most against an FBS opponent in a 60-minute regulation game…Manny Morgan his first collegiate start and his first 100 yard game…The two defensive touchdowns were the first for the Zips since November 11, 2014 at Buffalo…DL Daumantas Venkus collected his first fumble recovery and first collegiate touchdown…UA is 2-1 lifetime against the Sun Belt Conference (1-1 vs Louisiana & 1-0 vs New Mexico State)
 
THE SERIES:
The game is the first lifetime meeting between the two schools..The two will meet again  in 2022 at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone
 
APPALACHIAN STATE MOUNTAINEERS (1-0)
 
THEIR LAST TIME OUT: The Mountaineers faced nationally ranked Miami (FLA) last Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone. It was one of the biggest home games in school history. However, the visitors dominated the contest and came away with a 45-10 victory that sent ASU’s record to 1-2. The Hurricanes scored a touchdown on the game’s first play en route to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and went on from there as they had 549 yards of total offense on the afternoon
 
MOUNTAINEERS SEASON TO DATE: ASU opened the 2016 season at nationally ranked Tennessee and held a 13-3 at halftime before the Volunteers tied the game early in the fourth quarter and then won it in overtime, 20-13…In week two, they registered their first win by defeating Old Dominion at home, 31-7.

RUSHING: Marcus Cox 49 carries-278 yards-three touchdowns

​ASU is 1-2 lifetime against the Mid-American Conference (0-2 vs. Bowling Green, 1-0 vs. Ohio – defeating the Bobcats in last December’s Camellia Bowl)…Mountaineers first ever game in the State of Ohio…ASU selected to finish first in the pre-season Sun Belt Conference poll …In facing Tennessee and Miami (FLA), the Mountaineers are one of seven schools (the remaining six are from the power five conferences) to have played two ranked teams so far this season.
