The two schools have met four times, with each owning two victories. Only one of the previous meetings was played in Buffalo, and the Bulls took that 2008 encounter, 27-24, in overtime. Army won the most recent meeting, 47-39, I 2014. That was head coach Jeff Monken’s first game as the Black Knight’s head coach. Monken was an assistant coach at Buffalo from 1992-94.
This year’s matchup could feature a double dose of ground. Army, of course, is known for its rushing attack. However, it seems to be a pretty good rushing season – so far – for the Bulls. UB has rushed for over 200 yards in each of its first two games. Since joining the FBS ranks in 1999, the Bulls . . .
Buffalo is still looking for its first win of 2016, having fallen to Albany, 22-16, in the opener and at Nevada last week, 38-14.
Army, meanwhile, is off to a 3-0 start – the first such start since 1996. The Black Knights jumped out of the gate with a 28-13 road win at Temple. They followed that with a 31-14 victory against Rice and 66-14 road win at UTEP. Army had not won three straight games sine 2003.
► Army’s rushing attack has moved up to second in the nation with 424 yards against UTEP.
► Army scored on all nine possessions against the Miners, including eight touchdowns.
► The Black Knights have forced opponents into seven turnovers. Army, meanwhile, has yet to commit a turnover.
► Army returns 15 starters – seven on offense and eight on defense.
► The Black Knights average 5.3 yards per rushing attempt. They have thus far registered 209 carries for 1103 yards and 15 TDs.
► Five different players have recorded at least 121 yards rushing through three games. Andy Davidson leads the way with 62 carries for 334 yards (5.4 ypc) and six scores. Darnell Woolfolk has four touchdowns.
► Option-oriented Army has thrown a total of 13 passes this season, good for 255 yards and one TD. Edgar Poe and Jeff Ejekam are the only players with more than one reception. Both have three catches.
► Senior kicker Mitchell Howard has converted all 14 extra ponts and two of four field goals with a long of 27.
► LB Jeremy Timpf has registered 16 tackles with one interception. LB Kenneth Brinson owns nine tackles, including two sacks. DB Marcus Hyatt has 10 tackles and an interception.
BUFFALO BULLS (0-2, 0-0 MAC)
► The Bulls fell at Nevada, 38-14, last week. UB trailed 24-0 at the half and was behind 31-0 before getting on the scoreboard with a TD at 3:01 of the third quarter. That score came on a 57-yard pass from Tyree Jackson to Jordan Johnson.
► Jackson has completed 21 of 47 passes (44.7%) for 255 yards with two TDs and one interception.
► Johnson has been the Bulls rushing workhorse, carrying 40 times for 201 yards (5.0 ypc) with UBs only rushing TD. Tyree Jackson is averaging 8.2 ypc with 18 totes for 147 yards.
► Senior tight end Mason Schreck leads Buffalo receivers with six catches for 89 yards and one TD.
► Kicker Adam Mitcheson has converted all three extra pont tries and three of five field goals with a long of 45.
► Linebacker Khalil Hodge has registered 23 tackles, while Ishmael Hargrove (Jr., LB) has 17 tackles and a sack.
