SDCCU Stadium -- San Diego CA
As tough as that 35-28 loss might have been, the Eagles have another opportunity to beat a quality opponent this weekend. It won’t be easy.
The game is at San Diego State, where the Aztecs are coming off a big 28-21 win over #23 Arizona State. They did it behind junior QB Randy Agnew, who became the first quarterback from a non-Power 5 school to to beat a ranked Power 5 team in his first start since 2009.
SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS (2-1)
➤➤ Agnew completed 12 of 24 passes for 129 yards with one touchdown in the upset win over ASU. He also ran nine times for 36 yards, with a long of 13.
➤➤ SDSU did much of its damage on the ground, picking up 311 with two touchdowns against an Arizona State team that had been relatively stout against the run. Junior Juwan Washington (5-7, 180) and sophomore Chase Jasmin (5-11, 195) combined for 250 yards on 43 carries to lead the way.
➤➤ Seven different Aztec players caught passes against ASU, but only one had more than two catches. (Kahale Warring - 4 catches, 30 yards).
➤➤ San Diego State commited the game’s only turnover, a fumble that nearly came back to haunt the Aztecs. ASU rushed down the field on a final drive that nearly resulted in points. Parker Baldwin broke up the final pass for the end zone.
➤➤ San Diego State committed nine penalties for 85 yards
➤➤ The Aztecs opened 2018 with a road loss at #13 Stanford (31-10) and knocked off Sacramento 28-14 before the upset of Arizona State.
➤➤ The Eagles fell behind hosting Buffalo 14-0 in last week’s MAC opener and spent the rest of the game playing catch up.
Each time Eastern scored a touchdown, Buffalo answered with one of its own.
And so it went, with UB bumping its lead back up to 14 again on a 75-yard Tyree Jackson to K.J. Osborn pass play three minutes into the fourth quarter.
Eastern managed one more scoring drive, but when Mike Glass III tallied from one yard out to make it a 35-28 game, there were only 42 seconds left. Buffalo recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
➤➤ There was only one yard difference in total offense between Buffalo (489) and Eastern Michigan (490).
➤➤ Glass was seeing his first Mid-American Conference action. After EMU totaled just 51 yards on its first three possessions, Glass entered and tossed two 70+ yard touchdown passes on his first three throws.
➤➤ Of the Eagles 13 touchdowns this season, three have been 75 yards or more.
➤➤ Eastern opened the season with a 51-17 win over Monmouth and followed up with its 20-19 victory at Purdue
