Riding a four-game losing streak with No. 1 Louisville waiting in the wings, the Miami RedHawks ground out a 79-67 victory over winless Mississippi Valley State.
It was a tough day for Miami, which lost its leading scorer, Nike Sibande, due to injury in the first few minutes of play. He was in a walking boot by halftime.
It was the latest in a spate of injuries that head coach Jack Owens said has made it difficult to effectively practice. Guard Mekhi Lairy also went down shortly after Nike, but Lairy was able to return, eventually scoring five points and dishing out five assists in nearly 20 minutes of action.
The RedHawks were up by nine (46-37) at the break, but MVS's helped the Devils cut their deficit to five and force a Miami time out before the first minute of the second half was done.
"Those are just careless turnovers," Miami head coach Jack Owens said, noting his team had just two first half miscues and eight in the second period.
MU regrouped during the time out and pushed the lead out to 13 points after play resumed. It was 12 points with 10:42 remaining when Mississippi Valley State ran off nine straight points to close within three at 60-57 on a dunk by Brandon Kimble at the 6:49 mark.
Bowman led Miami with 20 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Dalonte Brown registered his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards. Dae Dae Grant and Josh Brewer came off the bench, combining for 22 points and 11 rebounds.
"Because of injuries, we're playing (Josh) at the four. In reality, he's a wing, ... but he's a talented kid," Owens said.
