TOLEDO, OHIO – The Toledo Rockets scored touchdowns on three of their first four possessions to kick start a dominating 48-21 win over Akron Saturday afternoon at the Glass Bowl.
Senior WR Logan Woodside passed for 304 yards and five touchdowns in three quarters of action as the Rockets improved their record to 6-1 overall.
UT’s third straight win . . .
Akron (4-4, 3-1 MAC) saw its three-game losing streak come to an end as the Zips suffered their worst loss since a 52-0 loss at Penn State on the opening weekend of the season.
The Zips got back into the game on the first play of the second quarter on a flea flicker, Senior QB Thomas Woodson found freshman TE Kobie Booker all alone in the end zone from 26 yards out to make the score 21-7.
Woodson played three quarter, connecting on 18-of-33 through the air for 205 yards and a pair of scores.
UA’’s last chance to get back into the game came late in the second quarter,
Pinned on their own one-yard line after a UT punt, the Zips moved to the Toledo 23 with the help of three defensive penalties.
It was third down when Woodson appeared to complete a pass to Kwadarrius Smith at the two-yard line. However the play was overturned by the replay official. On the next play, Tom O’ Leary missed a 40-yard field goal, effectively ending any chance for the Zips to get back into the game.
The Rockets scored on their first possession of the third quarter with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Woodside to Jonvea Johnson and added yet another passing TD -- this one from Woodside to Diontae Johnson before the period ended.
That gave the hosts a 38-7 lead.
Both coaches emptied their bench and both teams saw scores after the game was in hand.
Next week, Akron ereturns home to play Buffalo while Toledo heads to Ball State to face the Cardinals.
